Part 2: Job description

Job purpose:

To manage and drive the implementation of Embrace the Middle East’s advocacy & campaign initiatives, working closely with senior leaders to shape and develop Embrace’s targeted advocacy and popular campaigning strategy.

Major responsibilities:

  1. To lead the design and development of Embrace’s approach to advocacy and campaigning, as part of our overall strategy.
  2. To lead the implementation of Embrace advocacy campaigns (including developing digital and print materials for and with Fundraising and Marketing)
  3. To work closely with the Programmes & Partnerships team to ensure advocacy is rooted in our Middle East partnerships.
  4. Reporting back to colleagues and the Board
  5. Other general duties commensurate with the post.

Key tasks:

  1. Lead the design and development of Embrace’s approach to advocacy and campaigning
  • Lead the development of advocacy policy positons in line with the charity’s strategy.
  • Produce key advocacy messages to increase Embrace’s visibility and engage support from new and existing influential parties
  • Take the lead within Embrace for the development and coordination of all advocacy and campaigning activities.
  • Set and monitor KPIs related to advocacy and campaigning activity.
  • Advise the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) on the development of reactive and opportunistic policy statements as required.
  1. Lead implementation of Embrace advocacy campaigns
  • Lead the development of Embrace’s profile within international development advocacy forums (eg BOND, Global Connections).
  • Work in collaboration withthe SLT and external agencies to develop and managekey media partnerships and relationships, maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of influential outlets and relevant media stakeholders.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Fundraising and Marketing team to propose and develop innovative campaign tactics and gain media attention.
  • Implement a diverse range of advocacy activities including writing reports, briefings, press releases and policy position statements
  • Identify relevant high profile influencers and then work to establish and develop relationships. This will include but not be limited to: Ministers, MPs, Peers (including the Lords Spiritual), civil servants, think tanks, NGOs etc.
  • Work closely with the Fundraising & Marketing team to integrate campaigning communications into the overall supporter journey.
  • Represent Embrace at relevant pubic events and in the media, including speaking at supporter events and external meetings with relevant influential parties
  • Cultivate public engagement, speaker and networking opportunitiesfor Embrace’s senior leaders to engage support of high profile influencers.
  1. Rooting advocacy and campaigning in local partnerships
  • Work closely with the Programmes & Partnerships team to understand the ‘voices’ of Embrace partners on advocacy-related issues.
  • Ensure in-country advocacy work supported through local partners is incorporated into UK advocacy campaigning where appropriate.
  • Work with the Programmes & Partnership team to identify any potential negative impact of Embrace advocacy or campaigning on our local partners.
  • Provide targeted advocacy and campaigning support to Embracelocal partners as required.
  • Undertake visits to local partners in the Middle East and deliver training sessions as required.
  1. Reporting back to colleagues and the Board
  • Prepare and deliver an annual advocacy and campaigning report at the residential Board meeting each autumn.
  • Provide bi-annual reports to the Programmes Partnerships committee on advocacy progress and policy position development.
  • Provide regular updates on the development of Embrace’s advocacy and campaigning to the SLT.
  • Provide regular updates on advocacy and campaign developments to the Fundraising and Marketing team and to Embrace colleagues more widely.

Attribute / Essential / Desirable
General Education / University degree or equivalent (eg significant practical experience) / Undergraduate or post-graduate qualification in development studies or a related subject
Skills and abilities / Demonstrable negotiation, influencing and relationship-building skills
Skilled presenter with ability to communicate in a clear, concise and compelling manner to a wide range of audiences
High level research, analytical and strategic thinking
Excellent written and spoken English
Ability to identify and direct creation of new forums and opportunities to generate innovative ideas
Excellent planning, management and co-ordination skill with ability to organise a complex and diverse workload.
Computer literate in Word, Excel and Outlook / Cultural awareness of the Middle East and/or experience of the issues of the region
Proven ability of planning and carrying out training sessions
Experience / Experience of developing and delivering policy and advocacy strategies, and influencing policy change
Experience of working / networking with senior level influencers (including but limited to Ministers, MPs, Peers (including the Lords Spiritual), civil servants, think tanks and NGOs
Experience of working with established,and developing new, media contacts – print, TV, radio and digital
Experience of advocacy and campaigning in a similar role
Experience of developing popular campaigning materials. / Experience of working in or with a faith-based organisation
Experience of having visited the Middle East or having lived/worked in the region
Personal / Self-motivated and able to work under pressure and prioritise effectively
Confident public speaker
Good team player prepared to contribute to the overall success of the organisation

Job Title:Advocacy & Campaigns Manager

Contract basis:Permanent, full-time, subject to six months’ probation.

Reporting to:Director of Programmes & Partnerships

Direct reports:None

Location:The charity’s head office at 24 London Road West, Amersham, Bucks HP7 0EZ

Hours of work:36.5 hours a week. Normal working hours are Monday to Thursday from 8.30am. to 5.00pm and Friday from 8.30am. to 4.00pm. Overtime is not normally paid, but the post holder may be able to take time off in lieu of extended hours worked.

Salary:Band 3

Pension:Eligible employees will be automatically enrolled into the company’s Group Personal Pension Scheme. The minimum employer contribution to the scheme is currently 6%, while the employee contribution can be at any level, with Embrace matching employee contributions of up to 3%, in increments of 1% (ie maximum employer contribution of 9%). Salary sacrifice is available.

Death in service:Life Assurance (Death in Service cover) of 3x salary will be provided for your spouse/dependants in the event of your death whilst you are an active employee of the charity.

Holiday:The standard annual holiday entitlement in any holiday year is 30 days, inclusive of recognised public holidays. In addition, the office is closed between Christmas and the New Year.

Circumstances:The role is suitable for some home and remote working. The post holder should however be able and prepared to work from the Embrace office in Amersham on a regular basis. The role is not suitable as a job share post.
