Galatians 4:21-26 KJV

(21) Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

(22) For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

(23) But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

(24) Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

(25) For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

(26) But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

I.vs.21, Legalist don’t understand the nature of the law. When we enforce the law upon a believer , we guarantee his failure. He will violate the law because he has a sin nature. Without the resource of the Holy Spirit and a daily walk with the Lord, it is only a matter of time before he will give up in frustration and the quality of his walk with God will die out. This is why most of God’s people are “burnt out” and no longer active in their service for God.

Hebrews 4:10-16 KJV

(10) For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

(11) Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

(12) For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

(13) Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

(14) Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

(15) For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

(16) Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

II.vs.22-23, The two sons mentioned are Ishmael and Isaac. (see also Gen.16,17 and 21)

A. Ishmael –was born of Hagar a bondmaid, due to mankind trying to “help” God out. He represents the works of the flesh.

B. Isaac – was born of Sarah a free woman, due to God’s promise to Abraham. He represents faith and trust in God’s promises.

C. Paul mentions these two in an effort to show the two types of spiritual sons, Bond and Free. There are numerous types of people on the planet and various types of religions with them, but biblically there are only two – SAVED or LOST. Likewise there are only two types of believers – BOND or FREE.

1. You are either saved or lost .

John 3:1-21 KJV

(1) There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

(2) The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

(3) Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

(4) Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

(5) Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

(6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

(7) Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

(8) The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

(9) Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

(10) Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

(11) Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

(12) If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

(13) And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

(14) And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

(15) That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

(16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

(17) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

(18) He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

(19) And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

(20) For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

(21) But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Acts 4:12 KJV

(12) Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV

(8) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

(9) Not of works, lest any man should boast.

2. If you are saved then you are one of the two types of believers, bond or free.

Romans 8:14-15 KJV

(14) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

(15) For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Galatians 5:1 KJV

(1) Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

III.vs. 24-26, The allegory mentioned is a type, parable or picture of the two covenants:

A.The covenant of the law.

1. This covenant was given at Mount Sinai, and signified by Moses. This is represented by Hagar(Agar)a slave girl. The law gives birth to bondage, when a man places himself under a list of rules , whether he is doing it for salvation or to please God after salvation he is placing himself under a curse of bondage which results in failure.

2. The law answers to “Jerusalem which now is”, a worldly system controlled by the Religious Jews and passed down to her children.

B.The covenant of promise.

1. This covenant is represented by Sarah. It is the covenant of grace and liberty found in Jesus Christ. You were free born when you were born again. Your new nature in Christ is freedom through Christ. Stop trying to purchase or earn this freedom yourself with rules and laws.

2. This covenant is related to “Jerusalem which is above”, Mount Zion, the Heavenly Jerusalem.

Hebrews 12:18-29 KJV

(18) For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

(19) And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:

(20) (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:

(21) And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)

(22) But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

(23) To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

(24) And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

(25) See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

(26) Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

(27) And this word,Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

(28) Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

(29) For our God is a consuming fire.

Revelation 20:11-15 KJV

(11) And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

(12) And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

(13) And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

(14) And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

(15) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:1-27 KJV

(1) And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

(2) And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

(3) And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

(4) And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

(5) And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

(6) And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

(7) He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

(8) But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

(9) And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.

(10) And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,

(11) Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;

(12) And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:

(13) On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.

(14) And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

(15) And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.

(16) And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.

(17) And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.

(18) And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.

(19) And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;

(20) The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.

(21) And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.

(22) And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.

(23) And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

(24) And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.

(25) And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.

(26) And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.

(27) And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoeverworketh abomination, ormaketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Revelation 22:1-5 KJV

(1) And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

(2) In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

(3) And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

(4) And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

(5) And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

We must always keep in our mind that it is Christ in us that bears fruit and not ourselves. The only way a christian can be fruitful is to turn control of their life over to Christ and allow the life of Christ be lived through them. A walk with God is never governed by what we do but of whose we are. If you are God’s child then stop trying to run the show and allow Him to guide your walk.
