A diachronic account of the history and contribution of the church of Our Lady Phaneromeni to the city of Lefkosia within-the-walls and to the wider island. “In Crisis - Terra Mediterranea”

The exhibition aims at detecting, investigating and presenting contemporary artists’ reflections on today’s universal landscape of economic, political, religious, social, but also deeply existential crisis of identity. A dynamic group of 41 artists from Cyprus, the surrounding area and beyond (Greece, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, Bulgaria, Great Britain, United States) will be scrutinising the current turbulence experienced globally, especially as viewed through “Mediterranean” eyes, from both a political and a poetic stance. Within the framework of wider efforts to get foreign visitors better acquainted with the old city within the walls, the Lefkosia (Nicosia) Municipality from 1987 established a series of thematic walking tours. These tours have been reorganised to present various new aspects of the old city as well as the city outside the walls. A city like Lefkosia (Nicosia) with its 5000 yearlong history has much to offer. By walking, one gets a better feel for a place and its yearlong atmosphere, then and now, and a better understanding of its continual cultural development. MARE LIBERUM

An exhibition centred on Navigation in the Mediterranean Sea during the 16th to the 19th centuries. The exhibition focuses on Portolan charts and their history and origins, illustrates the cities and the ports that flourished, examines the different types of ships that navigated, whereas special attention is given to famous sea battles and to piracy, both Christian and Muslim; The last chapter of the exhibition is dedicated to the Capitulation that the Ottoman Empire offered to the European states, and to the origins and development of maritime law in the Mediterranean Sea. 1. Germasogeia - A Village Blessed by Water

This tour aims to take visitors to the peaceful, picturesque village of Germasogeia 15 minutes away from the beach, to stroll through its narrow streets, see its special architecture, visit its churches, and feel the village life. Water has always been the most important element in the development of Germasogeia. It is bounded by the sea in the south and on its north it has as a physical boundary, the water dam of Germasogeia fed by the river Amathos coming from the mountains of Troodos. The tour also includes a visit to the water dam of Germasogeia.
