English IV

English IV is an examination of British literature as it reflects social perspective and historical significance by continuing to use language for expressive, expository, argumentative, and literary purposes. The emphasis in English IV is argumentationby developing a position of advocacy through reading, writing, speaking, listening, and using media. Class curriculum will include short stories, poetry, novels, grammar, literary terms, and proper writing techniques. Students can expect extensive reading and writing, and should have a solid background in the subject of English.

Class rules and expectations

1. Late or incomplete class work/homework will be penalized.

2. Late major assignments (papers/projects) will be penalized 10 points per day.

3. Students are expected to be on time with all materials each day.

4. Students are expected to be respectful to the teacher and to others at all times.

Class Materials

1. Three-ring notebook with dividers (2”) for daily assignments.

2. Three-hole loose-leaf notebook paper.

3. Any form of notebook for daily journal (be creative).

4. Blue or black pen.

5. Any books given out during class.

-Short Stories/Poetry (The Modern World: 1900-Present)

*Writing, grammar, and MLA style will be introduced and reinforced throughout the semester.

Grading Standards

Daily Assignments/Homework: 10%

Tests: 20%

Quizzes: 20%

Projects/Papers: 20%

Final Exam: 25%

Participation: 5% (includes attendance/work ethic/participation in class)

Homework will start with a grade of 100. 5 points will be deducted from overall grade each time it is not presented during class. Final grade will be determined at the end of the semester. You are responsible for turning in your homework after the first day. I will not ask you for it.

According to the Student Handbook, makeup work for unexcused absences will result in a grade NO HIGHER than a 75.

Students must see me about makeup work. This is your responsibility.
