A trio of fantastic folk concerts form part of the RNCM’s Spring season, with Salsa Celtica, Spiers Boden, and Melrose Quartet all performing in March.

With their long awaited new studio album released at the start of the year, 2014 is going to be a milestone for Salsa Celtica. Combining some of Scotland and Ireland's leading Celtic musicians with a stellar group of international salsa musicians, Salsa Celtica are recognised for their stunning combination of virtuosity and energy. The group’s unique synthesis has been rapturously received around the globe, from the village halls of Scotland to the most prominent music festivals. In short, there has never been a better time to catch this exciting group perform live.

Following an incredibly successful 10th anniversary tour, including a special birthday bash at Shepherds Bush Empire, Spiers Boden bid a fond farewell to life on the road this season, announcing that Spring 2014 will be their final tour.

Described as ‘the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene’ and twice winners of the BBC Radio 2 folk award for Best Duo, Spiers Boden have made the genre of spontaneous, punky English folk very much their own stomping ground. Loud, proud, and with just a few acoustic instruments, they create a multitude of textures upon which they present traditional stories and dance music, propelling them onto the main stages of events including WOMAD and the Cambridge Folk Festival.

Melrose Quartet formed when multi-award-winning folk duo Nancy Kerr and James Fagan moved to Sheffield and met with long-term friends (and fellow English folk duo), Richard and Jess Arrowsmith.
As well as outstanding vocal harmony, the musicians are all respected players of their instruments – Nancy and Jess on fiddles, Richard on melodeons and James on his trademark guitar-shaped bouzouki. Their material ranges from rousing traditional English folk songs to complex interwoven vocal harmony and rich instrumental arrangements of their own writing, especially that of Kerr and Arrowsmith. They also let fly with hair-raising sets of jigs, polkas and hornpipes when the mood takes them.
