THE CHALICE

The weekly Sunday Bulletin of St. John’s Episcopal Church

January 29, 2017

He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God ? (Micah 6:8)

We begin a four part preaching series on the Sermon on the Mount today. Two weeks ago, I explained the importance of the word justice. Mispat in Hebrew means justice. Justice is relationship with the One God that brings the servant to do the will of God. As we explore the Gospel of Matthew in the coming year, we will constantly be looking at the messiah as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. In today’s lesson from Micah, we hear this word justice again. Matthew comes from the perspective of the house of Israel. Aligning oneself to the will of God is no easy task for any of us. Please listen to the teachings of Jesus Christ in the Gospel of Matthew. Maybe you have heard the words of the Beatitudes many times before, but listen to them again for the purpose of understanding God’s will in your life.

When Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge crowds, he climbed a hillside. Those who were apprenticed to him, the committed, climbed with him. Arriving at a quiet place, he sat down and taught his climbing companions. This is what he said: “You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule. “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought. “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat. “You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being ‘care-full,’ you find yourselves cared for. “You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world. “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family”

(Matthew 5:1-9 Message).

The translation of the message gives us a fresh look at what Jesus was teaching to the disciples. He gives a roadmap and game plan for the disciples for what they will be doing in the months and years to come. For the disciples, this was a radical departure from how they lived their lives. Jesus literally turns their worldview upside down. He says, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” May each of us draw closer to God in the coming year. May we love our neighbors as ourselves and may we respect the dignity of every human being.

In Christ’s love,

Fr. Duncan
