What is VoiceThread?
Voicethread ( is a multi-media online environment which allows all students to participate in classroom projects and discussions. It is safe, free, and user-friendly to teachers and students. This tutorial will take you through the necessary steps to get started.
1. Creating a VoiceThread – This part has been done for you
/ Go to the CREATE tab. From here you can upload a variety of media types stored on your computer or from an online source.Once loaded, you can click on the image to enlarge.
Types of media files supported by VoiceThread:
MovieGraphicsDocuments
.mwv.gif.ppt
.avi.jpg.pdf
.mov.png.doc
.flv.bmp.opd
.xls
.pps
Note: The following file types are not yet supported by VoiceThread
.zip.html.txt
.swf
/ You now have the options of rotating, replacing or trashing the upload if you change your mind.Otherwise, save the upload as your first entry. VoiceThread allows you to change the order of image as you construct your project. Add as many frames as you’d like.
2. Creating Student’s Identities
When you set-up your VoiceThread you can upload a picture of yourself or any other graphic to identify who is speaking or commenting. It is suggested that only pictures and first names be used.
/ To assign identities to the members of the class, you must go to My account in the upper right hand corner of the screen./ Click on Add an Identity, and add your name to the class list.
/ If you don’t add a picture, a default graphic will be inserted. You can edit your identity pictures as you please once you login.
Once you have an identity and a name, you can then comment on the class VoiceThread.
3. Commenting on your VoiceThread
There are 5 ways that you can add comments on a VoiceThread:
- Phone (cell or landlines)
- Webcam
- Microphones (internal or external)
- Text
- Uploads
/ Click on your option to begin adding comments
4. Text and Doodling on your VoiceThread
If you click on the TYPE button the following options will appear:
/ You can type your text in the box and also use the color palette to make notations directly on the image.The other methods of commenting function in a similar way, and the color palette is available on them as well.
5. Editing your VoiceThread before publishing
At the bottom of your screen are a number of options for editing and publishing your VoiceThread. The first option you will want to adjust will be the playback options. Click on the gear./ These features allow you to control access to changes made to your VoiceThread.
6. Viewing your VoiceThread
After you login to see our VoiceThread, you can enlarge the screen to full view by pressing the symbol to the left of the close box (upper right hand corner). You can also click on the image to enlarge it or to move it around the screen.
/ Using the left and right arrows on either side of the bottom of the screen will allow you to move forward or backward through the presentation./ You can also click on the image icon and all pages in the VoiceThread will become visible at once. Simply select the one you’d like to review.
