Youth Care Counselor

Job Summary:

Responsible for supervision of a group of students in a residential living unit. Attend to interactions between students and staff. Use Methodist Children's Home philosophy of care in interactions with and planning for students. Work as a team member, supporting and encouraging peers. Keep supervisor informed of important occurrences. Attend to unit management duties regarding care and maintenance of unit. Communicate with families providing accurate information in a strength based and affirming manner. Attend training provided by Methodist Children's Home pertaining to program and staff issues. Participate in team meetings re: Child Care and goal setting.

Duties And Responsibilities

1) Provide individual counseling using strength based model.
2) Use Life Space Interview techniques in crisis situations.
3) Lead or participate in Youth Empowerment Groups.
4) Encourage Peer Mediation.
5) Visit with students in unit on casual basis.
6) Remind students of Plan of Development goals.
7) Supervise group activities and intervene if inappropriate behavior occurs.
8) Participate in level system: assist in determining and giving level feedback.
9) Teach social skills required by team.
10) Participate in work projects with students.
11) USE PMAB for crisis behavior management.
12) Document daily interaction in log.
13) Document serious incidents.
14) Document student request for assistance forms.
15) Document Positive Incident Reports.
16) Follow policies and procedures as outlined in MCH guidelines, personnel policy handbook, and departmental manuals.
17) Administer medication per MCH guidelines.
18) Prepare snacks and meals.

Unit Management Duties

1) Document USDA forms when necessary.
2) Oversee upkeep of unit; assist students in maintaining unit cleanliness.
3) Assist students in keeping grounds clean.
4) Oversee student laundry duties.
5) Accompany students to meals.
6) Participate in emergency calls.
7) Participate in unit inspection.
8) Oversee upkeep of van; assist students in maintaining cleanliness of van.

Supervision

1) Use supervision for professional growth.
2) Attend regular supervision.
3) Attend mandatory meetings and required training sessions.
4) Understand MCH chain of command and follow.
5) Understand MCH personnel policies.
6) Participate in performance evaluations with supervisor.

Physical Demands

Must be able to participate in routine household cleaning and management. Must be capable of climbing several flights of stairs daily. Must be able to participate in physical, recreational activities with students.

Education

High School Diploma or GED required. Further education in child care related fields are required through McLennanCommunity College and Methodist Children's Home arrangement. Fifty contact hours of training are required annually including First Aid, CPR and Defensive Driving, etc.

Licensure

A valid Texas Drivers License is necessary and must meet and maintain Methodist Children's Home driving policy standards.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED, no Criminal History, an excellent driving record, and at least 21 years of age.

Other

The assigned Department will provide orientation for the position to reinforce the Child Care Counselor's knowledge of the job demands. The agency will provide in-service training on an annual basis to help develop knowledge, skills and abilities.
