Meeting Minutes

June 6, 2017

Present: Kathy Abalos, Berniece Andrus, Lynette Bellomy, Charity Bowie, Shelia Champion, Pam Clasgens, Cathy Davis, Valerie Fowler, Cooper Green, Denise Johnson, Garry Johnson, Tosha Malone, Pat McCay, Josh McCready, Mary Millhouse, Rick Nelson, Lydia Pennington, James Perkins, Linda Snead, Rick Tate, Sandra Watts, and Kay West.

1.  Welcome and Introductions were made around the room. -WELCOME to new

members!

2.  Treasurer’s Report was-given by Pat McCay. The current balance is $4,221.79.

3.  The meeting minutes for the May 2, 2017 task force meeting were approved.

4.  Rummage Sale for TVFS – Kay West

Kay West gave an update regarding the Rummage Sale for Tennessee Valley Family

Services which is scheduled for August 10 (drop-off items 12 noon to 6 p.m.); August 11 (the rummage sale); and August 12 (live auction with an auctioneer). She asked for volunteers to help on August 10 to set up as well as August 11 during the sale. The rummage sale will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church.

5.  Speaker’s Bureau – Pat McCay and Rick Tate

Training for those interested in participating in the Speaker’s Bureau was held on

May 9 (3 attended) and May 17 (8 attended) for a total of 17 who have begun the training.

6.  Training Coordinator – Rick Tate gave an update on all speaking and training dates. Also he stated that all speaking and training requests should be directed to him so we can capture all activities to reflect how effectively we are raising awareness during the year.

7.  Film Screening Project – Rick Tate, Chair, discussed the proposed date for the Film Screening project is July 20 at Trinity United Methodist Church (New Room). He also proposed that the film we use should be Eight Days because it gives a more general look at human trafficking, whereas the I am Jane Doe film concentrates on Backpage.com. The group agreed that Eight Days will be the film and the date of July 20 was approved for the film screening at Trinity United Methodist Church. We will need volunteers to set up and man the table display, handouts, and greeters.

8.  Other Upcoming Projects:

• January Awareness Event – Kay West will be the Chair of this event. January 13 has been selected and it will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church.

• In the Fall, we plan to host a labor trafficking event.

9.  The I-20 video was shown as an in-service training activity. With so many new task force members, it was felt that making sure everyone had viewed this compelling video was important.

10. Speaking Engagements Completed:

• May 6: West Huntsville United Methodist Church – Pat McCay

• May 5: Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force meeting, Montgomery – David Pinkleton, Tosha Malone, Rick Tate, and Pat McCay

• May 8: Respect the Law Celebration (Optimist Club) – Rick Tate and Pat McCay

• May 20: Scottsboro Catfish Festival – Rick Tate

11. New business:

• Pat McCay stated that Kathy Abalos’s daughter is doing an article about labor trafficking. She works for the Decatur Daily newspaper.

The next meeting: July 11, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at NCAC (July 4 falls on the first Tuesday)
