Implant Post-Operative Instructions

·  Wound care

o  Do not smoke for 48 hours, because this will promote bleeding and interfere with healing.

o  Do not rinse or spit forcefully for the next 48 hours.

o  Do not drink from a straw or drink carbonated beverages for 48 hours.

·  Bleeding

o  Some blood may ooze from the area, this is normal.

·  Medications

o  Take all medications that were prescribed to you as directed on the bottle.

o  Ibuprofen 800mg is needed to reduce inflammation take 1 tablet 3 times a day for 3 days.

o  Chlorhexidine mouth rinse, start using on the 3rd day after surgery ______.

o  Antibiotic as directed on bottle and be sure to finish.

o  Pain medicine as needed or directed on the bottle.

·  Diet

o  Do not chew on the implant or bite down directly on the implant during healing phase approximately 3 to 4 weeks.

o  Soft foods allow for faster healing.

o  If you find it difficult to get adequate supplement while on soft diet, liquids such as; Ensure, Boost, Slim fast will help.

·  Oral Hygiene

o  The morning following surgery, brush and floss all other areas but do not touch or brush the implants or stiches until told otherwise.

o  After brushing and flossing on ______you can start swishing with the prescribed mouth rinse for 30 seconds twice a day for 7 to 10 days. Wait 30 minutes to eat after rinsing.

·  Swelling

o  Swelling may appear on the third day following surgery. This is normal, do not be alarmed.

o  Apply ice pack to the area for the first 3 hours after surgery for 10 minutes on and 5 minutes off.

·  Stitches

o  If stitches have been placed in the area you will need to come back and get them removed in one week. Your appointment is on ______.

·  Call the office if:

o  You experience discomfort that you cannot control with your medication.

o  You have bleeding that does not stop.

o  You have increased swelling after the third day following surgery.

o  You have a fever.

o  You have any questions.
