Through interactive modules attendees will learn from, and share in the experiences of many Fire Chiefs. Some of the topics covered in this lecture/discussion format include; Purchasing, Budgeting, Planning, SOPs, Fire Organizations, Insurance/I.S.O., Laws/Liability, Leadership, Ethics, Media, MIOSHA., Mutual Aid, Personnel, Reporting, and Training.

“Fire Chief 101” is a course designed to assist current or potential Fire Chiefs in managing today’s modern fire service. This program is endorsed by the Michigan Fire Chiefs Association. Who should attend? The course is for new chiefs, progressive chiefs, staff officers, “fast track” firefighters, elected officials and Fire Board members. The course was developed by Fire Chiefs, for current and prospective Fire Chiefs. Participants will be given access to the FC 101 TexCom website where resources are available for downloading and sharing.

Presenters

Fire Chief David R. Peterson

Chief Peterson has been the Fire Chief for the Township of Plainfield since1993. Prior to this, he served as Chief in Fruitport, following a sixteen-year career as a firefighter with the city of Norton Shores including five years as Fire Marshal. Receiving his Fire Science degree from Lansing Community College, Chief Peterson has completed the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer program. Chief Peterson is a Past President of the Western Michigan Fire Chiefs, Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs, Past Executive Vice President of the Michigan Fire Service Instructors, current Vice President Michigan MABAS and presently serves on the Great Lakes Chiefs Board of Directors.

Fire Chief David J. Purchase (Ret.)

Chief Purchase has 37 years in the fire service beginning as a volunteer firefighter for the City of Norton Shores in 1975. He was appointed to the position of Fire Chief in 1999 and retired in June 2013. Chief Purchase has been a certified fire instructor for over 25 years and has taught fire officer programs around the state. Receiving his Associates degree from Muskegon Community College, Chief Purchase is also an EFO graduate of the National Fire Academy. Chief Purchase is the current Immediate Past President of the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs, member of the Michigan Fire Services Coalition and serves on the Governor’s SAFER committee. Under appointment by Governor Rick Snyder Chief Purchase is the Vice Chair of the Michigan Firefighters Training Council.
