Installation Instructions

To upgrade Recorder at version 6.9.3 to version 6.10 download the ‘Upgrade from 6.9.3.zip’ available on the Downloads page of the Recorder Software website at To run the upgrade, unzip the file and double click on RecorderUpgrade.exe.Make sure you have the "Use folder names" option selected when you unzip the file.

In addition, those upgrading networked copies of Recorder 6 should use the supplied WorkstationUpgrade.exe (in the Workstation Upgrade folder) to update their installation details so that future un-installation will work. To do this, take a copy of the upgrade folder and run this on every workstation with Recorder 6 on it by double clicking on the WorkstationUpgrade.exe file.

New Dictionary Upgrade Kit

A new version of the Dictionary Upgrade Kit is also included, which has been updated to accommodate the internationalisation of version 6.10. This file replaces the previous Dictionary Upgrade kit supplied and should be copied and stored on your hard disk. The new Upgrade Kit does not include any updates to the dictionary itself.

XML Reports Folder

Also included in the upgrade is the XML Reports folder. This folder contains 2additional XML reportsas follows:

Report Name / Provided By / Status / Description
SxBRC Find Designations for <taxon> V07-05 / Charles Roper of Sussex Biodiversity Records Centre / New report / Finds all designations for a specified taxon – can either by typed into the taxon field in the dialog box displayed, or you can search (by clicking on the magnifying glass icon) and return a selected taxon from the taxon dictionary browser screen.
SxBRC View Designation Details V07-05 / Charles Roper of Sussex Biodiversity Records Centre / New report / Displays information about the designations and statuses that exist within Recorder. Includes the following fields: abbrev, designation, full designation and description.

These reports take advantage of the HtmlToPlainText function provided in the upgrade to version 6.10. To use these reports copy and paste the two files - ‘SxBRC Find designations for taxon V07-05.xml’ and ‘SxBRC View designation V07-05.xml’ into User Files\Reports (found under C:\Program Files\Recorder 6\User Files\Reports in a default standalone instance). The reports can then be run in Recorder 6 via the Reports menu (Reports – Run…).

How to check Recorder 6 has upgraded

To ensure that the upgrade has run successfully, open Recorder 6 and go to Help – About Recorder 6… Check that the version number has been updated to V6.10.4.120.

If you do have access to the appropriate SQL Server tools, you can also open the NBN database and check that the Setting table contains the following information (note Version and DB Seq):

Alternatively, you can check these values via the linked Microsoft Access database. Open the NBNdata.mdb file (stored under C:\Program Files\Recorder 6\Database as default). Double click on the ‘Setting’ table and check the above values.

Report Designer

The report designer built within Recorder was originally designed to undertake simple formatting of report output. We would advise users with complex requirements to use other products such as Microsoft Excel or Access to format report output via the ‘Export to other formats’ function.
