Beaverdam Creek Reservoir Blasting Notice

The Belmont Glen HOA has been notified of blasting on the Beaverdam Creek Reservoir that will remove rock as they are building the new dam infrastructure. Blasting will take place on Loudoun Water property behind the pump station on Guildhall Drive. The blasting is one step in the reservoir project that will improve safety and reliability by bringing it into compliance with Virginia dam safety regulations for high hazard dams.
  • When will blasting start and how long will it last? The estimated start date is the first week of March. Blasting operations will occur once every two or three days during the week and last about a month.
  • Who is doing the blasting? Douglas Explosives has been contracted by Loudoun Water for this project. They have met with the Fire Marshall as required by law, and received the proper permitting from Loudoun County and the State of Virginia.
  • How will we know when blasting will occur? A warning horn will go off three times before each blast. A full schedule will be provided closer to the start date.
  • How close is the blasting to Belmont Glen homes? We have been informed that there is a safe distance of approximately 200 feet from the blasting area, and the nearest homes are approximately 400 feet away. We expect neighbors throughout the community to feel the blast. A seismograph will be on hand to measure the activity in the ground. If readings are high, they re-inspect the project before proceeding.
  • What does the map show? Miss Utility surveyed and marked area to note the location of utilities throughout Loudoun Water and community property. Homes within the blue area should be receiving door hangers with blasting notices.

  • Should I expect my home to be damaged? We’ve inquired about damage and have been informed that we shouldn’t expect any. However, residents should be diligent about their own property and check it if they have any concerns. The project includes a survey of the pump station, as well as a handful of homes around the station before and after blasting.
  • What should I do if I suspect damage? If you believe your home has been damaged, visual evidence is required. Please collect all evidence and send to our community manager, Jason Eglin, at Gates Hudson, and cc: . Jason has agreed to serve as the community point of contact for the project.
