Unit 1 Early Civilizations

Go over the objectives: Students will

  • describe the impact of farming on the development of early civiliations;
  • analyze the development of Egypt's empire;
  • describe important events in the history of Israel

Time Line Activity on page TE1 - using a multiple -tier time line. Review using context clues to figure out a word.

Preview Places to Locate - using the map on pages 2 and 3, students will identify major bodies of water shown, continents that are label, rulers of Egypt, Babylon. Create a chart on the rulers of people we will be studying.

As students begin reading Chapter 1 "The First Civilizations," they will keep a list of technological advances made during the era. Students will also create a foldable study organizer to compare and contrast the three ancient civilizations studied.

Homework: define the vocabulary words on page 8.

Tuesday - August 11, 2009

Go over vocabulary words, 10pts. Review how to skim a passage using reading skill preview on pg 6 and 7. As a class we will read and discuss section 1, Early Humans, and take notes on the passages. Read the biography on Otzi The Iceman. Students will do section 1 review on page 15, homework.

Wednesday - August 12, 2009

Go over Section 1 Questions. Students will take section 1 quiz and we'll go over it. Read section 2, Mesopotamian Civilization, and take notes on their own, define vocabulary words and places. Homework if not finished in class.

Thursday - August 13, 2009

Go over vocabulary words. Students will work in groups of 2, to go over the assigned topic and compare the notes they took over each section. They'll read each section and present their notes to the class on the overhead. If other students found something as important that that group didn't we'll add it to the notes.

Identify body of waters in the Mesopotamia region. Review the role of irrigation in early Mesopotamian.

Finish going over Section 2. Read and discuss the biography of Hammurabi. Discuss the meaning of fair and cruel. Read about Hammurabi's Laws and create a chart on fair and cruel and put the rules in the column they belong. Debate the issue, whether they were fair or cruel.

Monday - August 17, 2009

Review Neolithic and Paleolithic Age. Introduce Mesopotaimian Civilization, Objectives: The people of Sumer, an early Mesopotamian civilization, invented watching a United Streaming Video, Mesopotaimian. While watching the video watch for the words that are in our vocabulary list and come up with there meanings. Go over terms after the video.

Homework - read the section Mesopotamia's Civilization, and write two pieces of key information from each blue heading, pages 17 - 20.

Tuesday - August 18, 2009

Read and discuss Mesopotamia's Civilization, going over the key facts the students came up with. As a class we'll decide if we agree or not or if we need to add any other information to the key facts they have. Then in groups of two the students will read "A Skilled People," pages 20 - 23 and come up with the key facts.

Homework Section 2 Review page 23.

Wednesday - August 19, 2009

Go over key facts from "A Skilled People," add to if needed. Read and discuss biography of "Hammurabi, ruler of Babylon. Go over Section 2 Review. Compete workbook activity 2, Mesopotamian Cultures, turn in.

Homework. You Decide.. Hammurabi's Laws: Fair or Cruel? Students will create a graphic organizer on Hammurabi's Code as to if they were fair or cuel laws.

Thursday - August 20, 2009

Students will be able to tell about Assyria's military power and it's well-organized government that built a vast empire in Mesopotamia. Be able to tell about he Chaldean Empire and the landmarks in Babylon and about the first calendar with a seven-day week.

Quiz on section 2. Students will chose sides and debate the issue of Hammurabi's Code.

Homework: Read Section 3 The First Empires compete Workbook activity sheet 3.

Students will turn in Activity sheet . Read and discuss lesson , The First Empires. Pass outactivity sheet for the students to grade.Quiz on section 3.

Introduce Chapter 2 "Ancient Egypt" Go over timeline for 3500B.C. to 500 B.C. Students will create a KWL chart. Go over what they already know about Ancient Egypt and make of list of things they would like to learn. They will create a foldable to help they organize key events and ideas from ancient Egypt and Kush. Go over the objectives for this chapter.

By the end of Chapter 2 students should be able to:

l. describe how the NileRiver influenced Egyptian civilization and the reasons behind the united government arising along its banks.

2. discuss government and religion practiced during the Old Kingdom

3. analyze the accomplishments of the Middle and NewKingdoms,

4. describe the Nubian kingdom that was south of Egypt.

In this section the students will trace the emergence of the Egyptian civilization along the banks of the NileRiver and the steps taken to create one united kingdom.

To begin this section we'll discuss what a dynasty is and what kind of government runs in the family.

Review the Get Ready to Read, to focus them on the section. Students will define the vocabulary words. I'll introduce the key terms using the jat.glencoe.com website for the Chapter 2 overview.

Section 2-2 Egypt's Old Kingdom - this section discusses the government, religion and ways of life during the Old Kingdom.

Read over the Focusing on the Main Ideas to see what we will be go over in this section. Go over vocabulary and people. Graphic organizer on Egyptian Beliefs that the students will fill in as they read section 2. Review the timeline from 2600B.C. - 2200 B.C.

Students will read section 2-2 and answer reading checks and section 2 Review.

Students will continue discussing Section 2-2 and going over questions. When finished they will create a 10 question multiple choice quiz.

Have a student give us a summary of Section 2, Ancient Egpt. Begin Section 3, Egyptian Empire. The students read this section last week and took notes, so has we read they will tell us the notes they took. The students are learning to pull out important information.

The Middle Kingdom, page 60. Study the pictures of the artwork the book includes. Compare Hieroglyphs to our computer icons.

Tuesday - September 14, 2010

The New Kingdom. The first woman pharaoh, Haeshepsut and her reign. The Legacies of Two Pharaohs, Akhenaton, who tried to go to one god, and King Tutanhkamen. Cats in Ancient Egypt. Refer back to what the students told us in their presentations.

Wednesday - September 15, 2010

The End of the New Kingdom, Reign of King Ramses II, Egypt's Decline and Fall. Go over section 3, review on page 67.

Section 4 The Civilization of Kush, - In this section they will trace how the Nubians build the civilization of Kush, which eventually conquerored Egypt.

Nubia, how it was established, economy was based on, farming, what's there today. The Kingdom of Kerma, and Why did Egypt Invade Nubia?

Homework, fiinish reading section 4 and taking notes, do reading check questions and section 4 review.

Thursday - September 16, 2010

Review what we learned about Kush yesterday. The Rise of Kush, The Importance of Iron for them, A New Capital. Locate Kush on a map and discuss it's location to Egypt, if that helped or hendered the take over. Building Profitable Trade, King Taharqa.

Go over section 4 review, sequence chart on the conquest of Egypt. Go over Reading Review for Section 2, page 73. Homework page 74 - 75 Assessment and Activities do numbers 1-7 Review Vocabulary, 8-15 Review Main Ideas, 16 - 19 Critical Thinking, 21 - 23 Geography Skills, Primary Source 28 - 29.

Section 2 - The Kingdom of Israel

Objectives: King David built an Israelite empire and made Jerusalem his capital city. Solomon built a great temple in Jerusalem. The Israelites were conquered and forced to leave Israel and Judah.

Review all vocabulary words. Complete chart categorizing information about the cities of Israel and Judah.

Read and take notes on The Israelites Choose a King, David and Solomon, and a Troubled Time.

Homework if not finished in class. Along with doing all reading check questions and section review on page 92.

Monday - September 27, 2010

Continues reading and taking notes. The students will read orally and then give the notes they have taken. Discuss if they got something different and why that was important to them. Go over all reading check questions. Quiz on lesson 2, using book.

Tuesday – September 28, 2010

Go over Section 2 Review questions on page 92. Take quiz without the book, 10 question multiple choice.

Proverbs, read some of the ones Solomon wrote. Primary Source on proverbs, page 89. Read some of Ben Franklins proverbs from Poor Richard's Almanac.

Understanding Charts, Hebrew Prophets, Go over the chart and who the prophets were and the periods they served in and their teachings.

Homework - Read Section 3 - The Growth of Judaism and answer reading check questions.

Wednesday – September 29, 2010

Objectives: The Jews continued their religion during the exile in Babylon. Jews spread their beliefs to the Greek world and regained control of Judah. Under Roman rule, the Jews were divided and rebellious. in response, the Romans destroyed the temple and exiled the Jews.

Take up homework.

Students will use daily lecture and discussion notes to take notes over this section, as we read and discuss orally. Review timeline on page 93.

Working on outlining. Students will begin to learn to outline. They will using the daily lecture notes out the section using headings and guides. Exile and Return and the Jews and Greeks. Study the photos of the torah scrolls and Daniel in the lions den.

United Streaming Video on the Maccabees. Refer to this when completing outline on section on daily notes.

Finish daily lecture notes for homework.

Thursday – September 30, 2010

Summarizing information organizer on the Maccabees.

The Jewish Way of Life - Compare and Contrast the Jewish way of life with ours. Link the past and the present, talking about the changes in headcoverings. Students will learn what kosher food is and the Jewish beliefs concerning their clothing.

They'll go over their daily notes that they did for homework to compare what they got with their classmates.

Homework - Notes for the Jews and the Romans on page 100-102, section review questions 1-5.

Friday - October 1, 1010

In this sections students will complete a timeline on the rise and fall of the Israel nation. Students will tell what made King Herod famous and what lead to the Jewish revolts. Students will learn the purpose of the rabbi in the Jewishreligion.

Quiz on section 3-3, using their book and note packets. Take up notepackets and quiz.
