Post: specialty doctor in ophthalmology

Base:royal hospital for children, glasgow

Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology, to join our team based between the Royal Hospital for Children and GCOR which are part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. This post is fixed term for a period of 1 year.

Applicants should have a strong General Ophthalmology background, preferably with an interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology. There is potential for other sub-specialty interests to be developed to complement service requirements.

The provisional job plan includes a paediatric ophthalmic genetic clinic, cover of a paediatric rheumatology clinic and research slots providing ophthalmic examination for multiple research projects. There is an SPA slot coinciding with regional teaching. An operating session is currently not included but can be provided depending on the experience of the candidate if they wanted to operate.

The post is based part of the week at the Royal Hospital for Children at the South Glasgow University Hospital. The research support component is based at the Glasgow Centre for Ophthalmic Research at Gartnavel GeneralHospital.

There is no on-call commitment for this post.

The post is full-time, although applications seeking part-time hours may be considered.

Applicants should possess full GMC registration, a license to practice and a minimum of 4 years’ (full time or equivalent) Postgraduate training, of which at least 2 years’ training must be within Ophthalmology.Possession of the FRCOphth is desirable but not essential. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

The Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow

The Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow, is one of the largest paediatric teaching hospital in the UK and the largest in Scotland. It provides secondary care for people resident within the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area, but also full tertiary care for the 3m people living across the West of Scotland. There are also 17 nationally designated services delivered from the hospital including cardiac surgery, bone marrow and renal transplantation, ECLS and complex airways.

As well as paediatric neurology and neurosurgery, all paediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented, including general medical paediatrics, cardiology, neonatology, nephrology, respiratory, endocrinology, gastroenterology, immunology and infectious diseases, dermatology, haematology/oncology, rheumatology, metabolic medicine, audiology, ophthalmology, ENT surgery, orthopaedics and general paediatric and neonatal surgery. A selection of child and adolescent psychiatry facilities are located within the campus along with a Child Protection Unit.

The hospital provides the major Undergraduate Paediatric Teaching facility for the University of Glasgow and accommodates the University Departments of Child Health, Child and Family Psychiatry, Medical Genetics, Human Nutrition, Paediatric Pathology, Paediatric Biochemistry and Paediatric Surgery. There is on site clinical audit and research and development support to assist with departmental research projects.

The Ophthalmology Department has a dedicated clinic area within the main outpatient department, in which a team of medical, nursing, optometric, orthoptic and photography staff provide a full range of clinic services.

The Ophthalmology Department has three operating sessions per week within the main theatre suite. Patients are admitted to a dedicated Day Ward or paediatric ward.

There is a Postgraduate Education Centre at the hospital, with full library facilities, lecture and seminar rooms.

Ophthalmology Medical Staff

There are a total of 36 consultant ophthalmologists in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, of whom 2 are based at Royal Hospital for Children. In addition to this Specialty Doctor post, there are 2 rotational Specialty Trainee placements within the paediatric Ophthalmology Department.

The successful candidate will spend 4 dedicated sessions working with teams within Glasgow Centre for Ophthalmic Research (GCOR – to support a broad range of research from device development, and technology evaluation to clinical trials both within ophthalmology and providing ophthalmic support for research in other specialities such as oncology and neurology. It is essential that the candidate is a team player and can work closely and productively with multidisciplinary teams. The centre is collaborating nationally and internationally and offers the successful candidate the opportunity to be embedded within a unique research facility providing ample opportunities for developing a research portfolio with publications and grant application opportunities.

Brief Description of the Acute Services Division of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde including adult ophthalmology

The Acute Division of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland. We provide a wide range of services from community-based care through to the full range of general hospital services.

There is a significant amount of complex surgical work carried out, as we are home to a number of the country’s tertiary and national services including heart and renal transplantation and cardiothoracic surgery. Glasgow is also home to the world famous Beatson oncology centre.

We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s three universities and make a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Research also has a high profile within the organisation. Excellent facilities for students and their tutors are provided in the brand new, £15 million, state of the art, Wolfson Medical School, based at Glasgow University adjacent to the Western Infirmary site.

Employing more than 44,000 staff, we serve a core catchment population of 1.2 million. Our patients not only come from Greater Glasgow and Clyde but also, in some instances, from the whole of the West of Scotland and for our national services, from the whole of Scotland.

We have eight hospitals north of the River Clyde, all with teaching responsibilities: Glasgow Royal Infirmary (including Princess Royal Maternity Hospital), Western Infirmary, Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospital, Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow Dental Hospital and School, Drumchapel Hospital, Blawarthill Hospital and Lightburn Hospital. With an annual budget of over one billion pounds this is a particularly exciting time to be joining NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Over the next decade there is planned investment of more than £750 million, this is the largest single investment programme in the history of NHS Scotland – giving NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde hospital accommodation for 21st Century health care.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde plans to develop a new pattern of Accident & Emergency Services for Glasgow that will see:

Specialist Accident & Emergency and Orthopaedic teams sited 24 hours a day at two centres of excellence – Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Southern General Hospital;

New rapid access for GP emergency referrals; and

Five Minor Injury Units staffed by nurse practitioners under the guidance of Accident & Emergency Consultants at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Gartnavel General Hospital, Southern General Hospital and at the Ambulatory Care Hospitals at Stobhill Hospital and the Victoria Infirmary.

As part of the Acute Services review, it has been decided that Ophthalmology in-patient services will be concentrated in Gartnavel General Hospital with services being delivered in a “hub and spoke” model.

The Glasgow Centre for Ophthalmic Research is a dedicated ophthalmic unit based in Gartnavel General Hospital Glasgow. It offers facilities and expertise as part of research and development services within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board. The centre offers state of the art ophthalmic imaging and visual electrophysiology services within modern, purpose designed clinics. Access to facilities for general medical examinations, imaging and laboratory analysis are also available. GCOR has a dedicated clean room, allowing administration of intra-vitreal agents. It consists of a multidisciplinary team including ophthalmologists, clinical research nurses, research scientists, technicians, coordinators and administrative staff with experience in the delivery of commercial and non-commercial research studies. GCOR at is heart, is an NHS innovation and translational research facility collaborating with other Healthcare, Industry and Academic partners nationally and internationally to develop new technologies/therapeutics of value to patients within the NHS.

5. The Job

There is a weekly post-graduate education meeting at the Tennent Institute for Ophthalmology in Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow.

There is no on-call commitment for this post thought the post holder will be expected to provide cover for ward referrals and emergencies between 9am and 5pm on the days at RHSC.

6. Education & Research

The Ophthalmology Department is proud of its reputation for training and has developed an enviable success rate in the College exams. The training provided includes induction, mentoring and regular assessment and appraisal as well as a comprehensive programme of in-house tutorials.

Senior and junior ophthalmologists have Wednesday afternoons set aside for Regional Postgraduate Teaching, which takes place at Gartnavel General Hospital. Regular participation in audit and clinical governance sessions will be expected. The programme allows time and space for clinical research, which is encouraged.

All members of the Department take part in monthly afternoon meetings at Gartnavel General Hospital which act as a forum for discussion and presentation of audit, interesting case reports, morbidity and mortality, critical incidents, current journal articles and reports of recent meetings. A short divisional meeting is held where reports are gathered from the various interest groups and matters of concern can be raised.

The successful candidate would be expected to ensure that they fulfil the requirements for continuing professional development. Study leave is provided.

The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.

SUPERANNUATION / New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via:
