John Howard Sanden to be Honored by Art Society
The Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists will honor John Howard Sanden with its Lifetime Achievement Award at its up-coming workshop the morning of February 9th at the lecture hall of the Greenwich Arts Council 299 Greenwich Ave. Greenwich, CT.
For over 30 years John Howard Sanden has been one of the premier portrait painters in America. He completed hundreds of commissioned portraits of leading figures in government, the professions, business, and education. He founded the Portrait Clubs of America, the New York Society of Portrait Artists and the Portrait Institute. He instructed at the Art Students League of New York, authored several books and instructional videos on portrait painting. Mr. Sanden conducted numerous illuminating seminars, workshops, and master classes.
Mr. Sanden is acclaimed as one of the Twelve Best Portraitists in America by Town and Country Magazine. He is the recipient of the John Singer Sargent Medal for Lifetime Achievement from the American Society of Portrait Artists. He also received lifetime achievement awards from the Portrait Brokers of America and the Hudson Valley Art Association.
During the workshop, he will deliver a lecture on John Singer Sargent and the Boston School.
The workshop, co sponsored by the Greenwich Arts Council, will contain lectures and panel discussions on the Boston School of portraiture and related portrait demonstrations reflecting the influence of the Boston School. The Boston School artists blended traditional French academic training and techniques with the true colors of nature used by the impressionists. In addition to the workshop, a juried portrait exhibition of over 50 contemporary classical portraits ”Faces of Winter 08” will be on display at the Bendheim Gallery of the Greenwich Arts Council. The juror will be Daniel Greene NA.
Participating artists are Robert Anderson, Igor Babilov, Ariane Beigneux, Laurel Stern Boeck, Wende Caporale, Daniel Greene, Marvin Mattleson, Mary Minifie, John Howard Sanden and Richard Whitney. It is a rare opportunity for, artists, art teachers, curators, collectors, and art historians to meet and learn from so many icons of portraiture all in one place and up close
