Humble ISD Universal Screening

Grade 5

Humble Intermediate Literacy Screening (HILS)

General and special education students in Grade 5 (except for students served in Life Skills or Applied Skills), should be administered the District’s Universal Screening Assessment: Humble Intermediate Literacy Screening (HILS) based on criterion below. Each student must have two marking period data points entered into the required Aware fields (exception – student enrolled within the last 5 weeks of the school year will have -1 or Z = Not Assessed entered in the required Aware fields for MarkingPeriod 4 .) (See Aware Data Entry Reference Guide for clarification.)

Beginning-of-the-Year (BOY)/Marking Period 1 (MP1)
Assessment to be completed by 6th week of school. Enter data into eSchool under Test Type MP1

Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) Guidelines – BOY
The HILS assessment is administered to:
·  All new students, regardless of their entry date
·  All returning students who were below grade level benchmark the previous year
·  Any student that received remediation* or intervention services
·  Any student the teacher has concerns about after student oral reading
Identify student’s instructional text level
·  (93%-96%) accuracy with Grades 3-5 - DRA Comprehension score of 12+
·  Do not use the DRA texts beyond the end-of-the-year benchmark (TL 44 or 50)
(Please note: If you are administering DRA TL 16- 28, you must also administer the Grade 3-5 DRA Comprehension “After Reading Discussion” component.. If a student is assessed on TL 14 and below, use the DRA Retell rubric.) / Returning students consistently on or above grade level/text level may not need to be assessed based on the following evidence listed below. If no evidence is available for review, student must be assessed. Evidence:
·  Running records / ·  Independent in fiction and nonfiction
·  Anecdotal notes / ·  Reads fluently (rate, expression, intonation)
·  Comprehension rubrics / ·  Writing closely aligns with reading text level
Aware– Data Entry
Once verified, enter the student’s TL and comprehension from previous year’s evidence into Aware. (See Aware Data Entry Reference Guide for clarification.)
The following assessments may be used if there is a need to continue assessing beyond the benchmark:
·  Books from the Guided Reading library
·  Alternate benchmark assessments
End-of-the-Year (EOY) / Marking Period 4 (MP4)
Enter data into eSchool under Test Type MP4
Grade 5 / Text Level / Grades 3-5 - DRA Comprehension / Spelling Inventory / Reading Survey
Students Below Grade Level or Remediated* / X / X / X / **
Students On or Above Grade Level / see criteria below / see criteria below / X / **
Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) Guidelines – EOY
The HILS assessment is given to
·  any students (also assessed in MP1/BOY) who have been below grade level benchmarks all year
·  any students who have received remediation* or intervention services in current school year
To determine if student has met MP4 benchmark:
Identify student’s independent text level
·  (97%-100%) accuracy on Benchmark TL44 or 50 with Grades 3-5 - DRA Comprehension score of 16+.
·  Do not use the DRA texts beyond the end-of-the-year benchmark (TL44 or 50).
The following assessments may be used if needed to continue assessing beyond the benchmark:
·  Books from the Guided Reading library
·  Alternate benchmark assessments
Students in a bilingual program are assessed in both English and Spanish.
(Please note: If you are administering DRA TL 16-28, you must also administer the Grade 3-5 DRA Comprehension “After Reading Discussion” component.. For TL 14 and below use the DRA Retell rubric ) / The end of year text level assessment for the students who are on or above the grade level/text level benchmarks (see +criteria below) looks like:
·  Identified Student ® Met All MP4 Grade Level/Text Level Benchmarks
·  No HILS or DRA assessment is administered
+Criteria for text level benchmark
·  Independent in fiction and nonfiction
·  Oral Reading Fluency(considered but does not determine text level)
·  Writing closely aligned with reading text level
Aware – Data Entry
·  Grade Level EOY TL and Grades 3-5 - DRA Comprehension score is entered into the Student Inventory in Aware (see Benchmark Targets below).
·  The student’s above grade level TL and Grades 3-5 - DRA Comprehension score, based on a preponderance of evidence (see BOY listing), is entered into the Beyond Benchmark field of the Student Inventory in Aware. (See Aware Data Entry Reference Guide for clarification.)
If a student in a bilingual program has not met benchmarks in English and Spanish, reassessment occurs in the language(s) in which benchmarks were not met.
