The annual report of the Network Site Specific Group for gynae-oncology has been agreed on behalf of group members by:

Name / Role / Date
Mr David Milliken / Chair of Gynae-Oncology NSSG / June 2015

This annual report relates to the period from April 2014 to May 2015 and is compiled to give an overview of the outcomes, achievements and challenges of the Peninsula Cancer Network Site Specific Group for Gynae Oncology

  1. Introduction

The Peninsula Gynae Oncology NSSG has continued to meet regularly although there had been a national cut-back in network support. A Peninsula Cancer Network Manager and Administrative Support have now been funded for an initial year by the South West Strategic Clinical Network (SWSCN) and a bid for future funding across participating trusts is expected to be approved by mid-2015.

Despite the large geographical area covered by the NSSG, the group is working very well together and keeping a strong clinical focus. Members are keen to share the outcomes of good practice and local developments which will enable the group to develop effective clinical pathways of care.

6. Clinical Guidelines (14-1C-106e, 14-1C-107e, 14-1C-108e, 14-1C-109e)

Draft BGCS guidelines for Endometrial Cancer to be adopted as standard guidelines with regional variation based on the most appropriate care that can be provided geographically.

7. Pathways(14-1C-111e, 14-1C-112e, 14-1C-113e, 14-1C-114e)

Current patient pathways will be reviewed as part of the Constitution and Clinical Guidelines updates. A presentation was given at the meeting on 23rd January 2015 on the proposed moved from professional led to self-management for following up patients and the increasing demand on services vs the benefit to patients of repeated professional follow-up. Not all patients are suitable for self-management hence there is a need for a risk stratification process to determine which patients go on either pathway.

8. Audit (14-1C-116e)

Carboplatin dosing in ovarian cancer was to be discussed at the Oncology Forum and CPGON will carry out the audit if appropriate.

Endometrial Audit 2011-2013 findings presented and discussed at January 2015 meeting. Agreed that MRI with or without contrast be added to the ongoing endometrial audit.

9. Patient Experience (14-1C-103e, 14-1C-115e)

A minimum of two user representatives will be invited to join the NSSG as co-opted members.

10. Survivorship (14-1C-115e)

Now labelled ‘Living With and Beyond Cancer’ and sponsored by Macmillan Cancer Support. The programme was devised to improve outcomes for patients and support practitioners in taking the actions necessary to drive improved cancer outcomes whilst reducing the numbers of follow-up appointments.

Catherine Neck gave a presentation at the January 2015 meeting. Overall it was felt that although trusts are making progress towards greater open follow-up, additional resources are needed to provide patient reassurance and to allow for the provision of space in clinics for patients to access the service at short notice if required.

11. Research and Clinical Trials (14-1C-117e)

The group discuss recruitment into clinical trials at each NSSG meeting. A report is presented highlighting the current and proposed recruitment status of each MDT.

The Cancer Research Network transitioned in April 2014 into fifteen local research networks, aligned with the Academic Health Service Network. The new South West Peninsula Cancer Research Network (PCRN) was set up to include:

  • Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust
  • Plymouth Hospital NHS Trust
  • Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust
  • South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
  • Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust
  • Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust
  • Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The new PCRN will:

  • Track EOI return rates
  • Identify and promote new studies
  • Identify blocks to recruitment and escalate
  • Coordinate regional meetings, forums, workshops and share good practice
  • Attend and support NSSG meetings by providing recruitment data and trials information
  • Support Peer Review

The Peninsula is supported by:

Duncan Wheatley, Clinical Specialty Lead -

Wendy Cook, Research Delivery Manager –

Ann Courtman, Administrator –

Jenny Forrest, Subspecialty Lead –

Latest recruitment data and overview of studies currently open can be found in ‘The Gynae-Oncology SSG Research Report – June 2015 on the network website:
