Smith Spectacular

Dec. 9, 2016

Have you seen the beautiful snowflakes throughout the Smith School? Thank you to Mrs. Brooker, her family and some Smith School staff for all their hard work on making our school a winter wonderland!

The winter season is upon us. Please prepare your child for outdoor recess every day. We go outside with temperatures 10 degrees and above. Students are expected to have snow pants and boots in order to play on the playground/field. Students who only have shoes and/or no snow pants are only allowed on the tar if there is snow on the playground. Winter is a fun time to play outside!

Recycling Team Update:

The recycling team is excited to announce we are able to recycle electronic items again! This includes: laptops, I-pods, I-pads, tablets, cell phones, laser and inkjet cartridges. For a complete list of items accepted by this new company we are working with, visit the following link: For more information visit: can be saved from home, community, or work and sent to school. If you have any questions, contact Sarah Young, recycling team leader at 223-4282.

Thanks so much for your support of our school and environment.

The “HANNAFORD HELPS SCHOOLS” program is coming to a close in December. Please place all “Hannaford Helps Schools” receipts in the “Leroy H. Smith School” slot in the Hannaford Helps Schools tower at the Hampden Hannaford by DEC. 18th. (Or turn them in to Smith School BEFORE that date.) This is an easy way to help raise money for Smith School while you do your weekly grocery shopping!

Have you met Baxter the Box Top Bear? He is an adorable stuffed bear who loves to support Box Tops for Education! Each month, he will be visiting the classroom that turned in the most BoxTops during the month. He is excited to meet all Smith School students! Keep clipping and donating your saved Box Tops and don’t forget to write your teacher’s name on your donation. Baxter is currently residing in Mrs. Patterson’s first grade class. We wonder which classroom Baxter will visit next?

PIE meetings are on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 6:30 in the school library. Join us at our next PIE meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 13th. We’d love to see you there!

To be added to the PIE email list or to ask any PIE-related questions— contact PIE President, Cathy Adamo, at: OR 223-1052. Check out our website at and “like” us on Facebook at “PIE Partners in Education - Leroy H. Smith Elementary School.”

Due to a lack of volunteers and minimal return from the program, PIE has voted to discontinue participation in the My Coke Rewards (Coke bottle cap) program. However, Wagner Middle School continues to participate in this program and would greatly appreciate any My Coke Reward caps that you collect.
