Respect: Individuals Lesson for all Grades

Objective: We will introduce the FISH Philosophy in order to examine how choosing your attitude affects your relationships with individuals throughout the day.

Materials:FISH KIT Materials, Character Traits Warm-up (one for each student), Casting worksheet (one for each student), Landing worksheet (one for each student), 1 fish video, 1 fish video teacher script, fish card to decorate (one for each student)

WARM-UP (5 Minutes): Pass out “Character Traits Worksheet” and have students choose if the trait is positive or negative. If it is negative, change it to a positive trait. Go over the traits.

ACTIVITY: (Times are approximate)

  1. (2 minutes) Begin introducing the FISH philosophy by asking if anyone has seen or received a fish that Mr. Ivanac has created to swim around the school. Explain that the fish were designed to be given to a student that has done something wonderful that made a teacher’s day and then it is passed on to a teacher that has made that student’s day and so on.
  2. (3 minutes)Next, read the teacher script of the history of the FISH Market. The ideas that we should BE THERE, CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE, MAKE THEIR DAY, and PLAY are the main parts of the FISH philosophy that Somers is incorporating into RISE. Briefly go over an example of each part of the FISH philosophy for the students.
BE THERE- giving someone your undivided attention
CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE- a response to what happens
MAKE THEIR DAY- recognizing when someone does something for you or others
    PLAY- have fun!
  3. (7 minutes) Pass out the CASTING worksheet and give students no more than 5 minutes to fill it in with what they think each of the parts might mean to them. Students can Think-Pair-Share their answers.
  4. (12 minutes) Play FISH video.
  5. (5 minutes) Pass out LANDING worksheet and have them make a final definition of each part based on the FISH philosophy in the video.
  6. (3 minutes) Go over the final definitions and have a brief discussion on how students can incorporate FISH into their day. Emphasize that PLAY is not horseplay.

CRAFT:

Pass out a fish to each student. Have them use their warm-up paper for a list of positive traits. Students will choose only 1 trait and 1 of the part of FISH philosophy to create a sentence about how they will RISE to the challenge of respecting individuals. If time runs out, they can complete the decorating of their fish for homework. Let them know there will be a prize for the fish that best demonstrates RISE and FISH. Students should submit completed fish to the teacher that presented the lesson.

Teachers: Please collect the Casting and Landing worksheets and return them to Ms. McKenney with the completed fish and the feedback form in the folder provided.

Ex. (on front of fish) Friendly

(on back of fish)I will make their (my friends’) day by choosing a friendly attitude.

RISE Lesson Feedback Form

The idea with this year’s RISE lessons is to let students explore the ideas of RISE more closely and most importantly, have fun with RISE. In meeting with that, each lesson will have a craft and will be less teacher-driven. The PBIS committee would appreciate your feedback on today’s lesson and certainly welcomes your input on the lesson committee if you would care to join. Please take a moment to complete this form.
