Professional Learning Day Agenda

Peel DSB elementary and secondary school principals, in consultation with their staffs as part of the school success planning process, will decide how best to structure their school’s professional learning on October 10, 2014. In compliance with Ministry of Education and Peel District School Board goals, schools will focus their professional learning on their primary goal, Numeracy.

All schools will include in their plan dedicated time to support their primary goal,Numeracy,and in addition can use some of the day to continue work in the other areas.

Professional Learning Day Agenda

Morning Session-Focus on Numeracy

9:30 am Working in groups, staff will discuss the balanced math program with examples from their curriculum and teaching practice.

9:45 am The principal and the Royal Orchard Leadership Team will review and discuss the Peel District School Board’s presentation, EngageMath, a comprehensive numeracy strategy to support the teaching and learning of mathematics built on three foundational drivers: Instructional Focus, Instructional Strategies and Assessment Practices.

10:15 am Staff will review and discuss the document, Balanced Mathematics Instruction, K-12. They will explore a menu of instructional strategies to support the teaching and assessment of mathematics in their classrooms and discuss how they are using these strategies in a balanced math program.

11:00 Staff will investigate ideas and concepts through open-ended problem solving. Each table group will be presented with a math challenge appropriate to the grade 6, 7 and 8 levels. Using a variety of strategies and tools such as manipulatives, technology and graph paper, groups will explore various solutions and communicate their thinking using mathematical language.

Afternoon Session-Imagine a Day. . . Building a Collaborative Community through the Arts

12: 45 Workshop by Mary Anne Fratia (Lecturer in the Master of Teaching Program at OISE) and Jeff Salem (freelance percussionist and writer). During this interactive workshop staff will collaborate and develop integral communication skills through participation in activities involving music, drama and visual images. Staff will explore the norms of collaboration which will provide the foundation for building a strong, caring school community.
