St Brendan’s Sixth Form College – Pre-enrolment Task

In order to give you a brief introduction to Graphic Communication andan indication of what it will be like to study this course for the next two years we would like you to complete a pre-enrolment task. The details are as shown below:

GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION summer 2017

Hello

Thank you for showing an interest in the course. Graphic communication is a very popular subject at St Brendan’s and can lead to exciting courses and jobs in later life.

It is essential that you understand what the subject is about before you commit: Graphic Communication is about creating images through any media and using typography to communicate a message or idea. The demands of the course are rigorous and you need to be very self-motivated and willing to complete work outside of lessons

Equipment

Please be aware that by the end of your 1st week of college you will be expected to have sufficient resources for your course, please see the separate letter for this, which outlines details of obtaining the studio kit. Throughout your course, you will also need enough funds to cover printing costs. Also, it would be advantageous to have access to a computer that has the internet and ‘Photoshop’ outside of lessons.

Summer project

Please see below for the tasks. YOU WILL BE ASSESSED ON WHAT YOU PRODUCE IN THE FIRST WEEK OF COLLEGE. PLEASE BRING YOUR WORK TO THE FIRST LESSON. FAILURE TO DO THIS MAY RESULT IN YOU NOT GAINING A PLACE ON THIS COURSE.

Good luck with your exam results and

we look forward to seeing you in September!

summer 2017– the project!

As a self promotion exercise, the artist Swifty, takes existing brand identities and replaces the brand name with his own name. Here are some examples of his work.

You can also find examples of Swifty’s work on either his web page () or, on the graphic communication page of St Brendan’s website – look for summer work

The tasks

  1. Find 5 examples of brand logos. (PLEASE AVOID MAJOR FOOD CHAINS)

The brands you choose could reflect your interests, e.g. from the clothes you wear, the food you eat, the team you support, the music you listen to etc, etc.

  1. Present these logo’s with a sentence or two for each, stating why you have chosen each one and describe it’s style (font, colour etc)
  1. As Swifty does in the images above, redraw each logo by hand but adapt it so it says YOUR name. You may not have all the letters to copy, so you will have to think what the letters of your name will look like in that style and how they will fit together. Draw and re-draw each logo until it’s really good, in order to show development, rather than one final image.
  1. When you have carefully redrawn each logo, add carefully matched colour to make a convincing outcome.

Do

  • Show an awareness of the typographical world around you and your willingness to record it
  • Take this exercise seriously and leave enough time to do it well
  • Consider carefully the presentation of your ALL your research
  • Annotate your work with accurate spelling
  • Think how your work will be transported to keep it in pristine condition

Don’t

  • Use neon highlighters or gel pens
  • Use stickers or ribbon or “decorate” work in ways that do not relate to the content
  • Roll paper up to transport

Please bring this work with you to your first graphics lesson.
