NuriaMorfin is aPhDcandidate andresearchassistantat theUniversityofGuelphsince2014.Her researchisfocused onthe interaction between bioticand abioticstressors(V.destructor and neonicotinoidinsecticides) onhoneybeehealth,behavior,viralreplication and geneexpression.Nuriahasbeenworking as aBeeInspectorfortheOntarioMinistryofAgricultureand RuralAffairsand has vastexperience asanextensionistin apiculture,collaborating withthe TechnologyTransfer Programof theOntario Beekeeper’sAssociation.Nuria,hasbeenworkingwithhoneybees since 2006,as aresearcheranda beekeeper,after concluding aFirstProfessionalDegreeinVeterinaryMedicine. In 2007,shecollaboratedwiththeHoneyBeeResearchCentre,UniversityofGuelph,ina projectinvestigating thecryopreservation ofdronesemen.
Nuriaconcluded her Master Degreein 2013,weresheworkedwithAfricanizedbees.Shehasmore thanten years of experience as anindependentbeekeeper ofhoneybeesand theneotropicalbees,Scaptotrigona mexicana.Nuriahasparticipatedin anumberofnationaland internationalforums, contributing activelyinapiculturalresearchandindustry.

This courseisdesignedtoguidestudentstolearnbythemselvesaboutbee biologyandbeekeeping.Using honeybees asthestudysubject,studentsare exposedtofundamentalbiologicalprinciples as well as to problem-solving issues.Studentslearn
aboutinsectevolution,behaviour,genetics,reproduction,anatomy,physiology,pollination,bee management,honeyproduction,etc.Theteaching approachisbasedoninteractivelearningactivitiesthroughwhichstudentsbuildtheir ownknowledge. Theinstructor and TA(s) willfacilitatelearning throughstrategies,whichinclude systematicreading assignments,online discussions,shortvideos,quizzes,written assignmentandexams.
Bytheendofthiscourse,youshould be able to:
1.Identifyand describe the fundamentsandscientificbasisofbeekeeping;
