Scale modeling lesson plan

1-10: NASA Explore the solar system
-Zoom to the planets earth and mars. Also find a satellite.

10-20: How to scale model PowerPoint/practice (sheet)

21-29: Make groups and give distances that we will be walking on the track. Give brief explanation of what we are doing the next day.

30-36: Explain How Big Planets Are assignment

36-end: Scale model the planets listed on the sheet to cm. On the back, summarize what scale modeling something is.

------Day 2------

1-10:Reminder what we are doing-start walking to track

10-40:Walking on the track activity.

Homework: Reflection of what you learned (1 paragraph-5 sentences)

These numbers are how far the planets should be from the “Sun”

Mercury 6 meters = 12 very small steps or 6 large steps from Sun

Venus 5 meters = 10 very small steps or 5 very large steps from Mercury

Earth 4 meters = 8 very small steps or 4 very large steps from Venus

Mars 8 meters = 16 very small steps or 8 very large steps from Earth

Jupiter 55 meters = 110 very small steps or 55 very large steps from Mars

Saturn 65 meters = 130 very small steps or 65 very large steps from Jupiter

Uranus 144 meters = 288 very small steps or 144 very large steps from Saturn

Neptune 163 meters = 326 very small steps or 163 very large steps from Uranus

All add up to the size of the track.

Day 3:

Scale Model of your own.

CHALLENGE:

You have this one class period to pic anything you would like and draw it as a scale model. Find a bed, table, car, computer, or anything that you could draw on a piece of paper in scale modeling form. Determine a scale factor that is appropriate for your picture you will be drawing.
