Conditions for use of objects from the collections* of the Jackson School of Geosciences, which includes the Non-vertebrate Paleontology Lab:

  1. All requests will be considered on a case by case basis. Loans of objects from the collections will normally be made only to other research institutions, not to individuals or to commercial entities.
  2. Non-researchand/or commercialentities may incur a fee for use of collections. (See below.) The NPL and JSGwill decide whether a proposed use is commercial. A use fee will not normally be charged to scholars using the collections for research purposes, although the museum reserves the right to assess a use fee to scholars under certain circumstances.
  3. Permission to reproduce photographs, publications, or other material for which the NPL, JSG or University does not hold the copyright will be granted only if the applicant demonstrates that s/he has obtained permission from the copyright holder.
  4. The applicant will defend and hold harmless the Jackson School of Geosciencesagainst all claims, demands, costs, and expenses incurred by copyright infringement arising from the use of the NPL'smaterial.
  5. The Jackson School of Geosciences must be assured that the proposed use of objects from its collections results in an appropriate presentation of the original item. Superimposition of text, cropping, bleeding, the addition or changing of color, or other alterations are not permitted without specific prior approval of the Jackson School of Geosciences. Objects from the collections must not be used for any purpose deemed offensive by the Jackson School of Geosciences or the University.
  6. Presentations of objects from the collections must bear the credit line stipulated on the Use form, or, if there is no statement on the Use form, use the following credit line: From the Collections of the Jackson School of Geosciences, The University of Texas at Austin.
  7. Photographic images for publication purposes are provided on loan only and must be returned promptly following use.
  8. Jackson School of Geosciences must be given a copy of any publication (in any medium) that makes use of its material.
  9. The applicant agrees not to make unauthorized copies of any materials provided by the museum.

*The term “objects from the collections” refers also to reproductions of objects, such as photographs or casts of fossils.

**FEES: Chargestypically include staff time and a use fee for each item published, reproduced, etc. Staff time will be charged at twice the individual’s hourly rate times the number of hours required for the project, with a minimum charge of one hour. The minimum charge for commercial use will be $100; the minimum charge for non-research, non-commercial use will be $50. Expenses of copying, telephone calls, postage, etc., will be billed separately at cost.
