Mission 7: Space Life?

Your superhero will soon be returning to Earth as a certified space expert. Among the many questions they’ll receive is this: Is there other life in our universe? As representatives and spokespeople of Schuffatt Industries, all superheroes will be required to answer such candid questions thoughtfully and without bias. Use the provided resources, and those of your own choosing, to craft a prepared statement to this significant question.

Learning Goals

  1. What are the odds of life in space?
  2. What types of life may exist in space?

Mission 8: Space Objects

You are nearly complete with your missions. Prior to returning home to Earth, Schuffatt Industries would like you to forage other space objects for natural resources in order to restock the lunar base. Crew A will travel to comets, Crew B to asteroids, and Crew C to meteoroids. Before embarking, each crew should identify the region in the solar system where each space object may be found. After arriving on the space object, each crew will identify the potential resources, if any, available for human use.

Learning Goals

  1. What is the composition of a comet and where are they primarily located?
  2. What is the composition of an asteroid and where are they primarily located?
  3. What is the composition of a meteoroid and where are they primarily located?

Mission 9: Galaxies and Black Holes

Schuffatt Industries is considering sending a superhero into the black hole at the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. In order to prepare for the mission, you must discover how the shape of our galaxy compares to other galaxies in the universe. Elect a crewmember to be sent to a black hole – consider selecting one whose powers will enable to them to return. In case of survival, share the harrowing experience with the crew and Schuffatt Industries. In the case of death, predict what might have occurred to the sacrificed crewmember.

Learning Goals

  1. What are the main shapes of galaxies?
  2. What is a black hole?
  3. What is the relationship between a black hole and a galaxy?
  4. Why do we know so little about black holes?
