Use their phonic knowledge to write simple regular words and make phonetically plausible attempts at more complex words.
Reading
Explore and experiment with sounds, words and texts.
Know that print carries meaning and, in English, is read from left to right and top to bottom.
Show an understanding of the elements of stories, such as main character, sequence of events and openings,
Writing
Write their own names and other things such as labels and captions, and begin to form simple sentences, sometimes using punctuation.
Handwriting

Adult led activity
Session1 Whole group:
Tell the chn The Christmas Story using my book. Discuss how there was a star over the stable at Bethlehem – and how the three Wise Men followed the star to find Jesus. Discuss what the wise men or the shepherds might have thought when they first saw the star over the stable. Re-enact these parts of the story, choosing chn to be the shepherds and the wise men and to act out some plausible conversations (based on what we are doing in the church).
Show the chd some pictures from the nativity story ask them to come to the front of the class and sequence the pictures so they retell the story.
Session 2 Whole group:
Re-read The Christmas Story (using the Communication 4 all interactive version). Discuss why we give each other presents at Christmas – to celebrate Jesus’ birth, to have a festival in winter which ‘lightens’ the dark days and gives us something to look forward to, to show our families how much we care, to make people happy, etc. Point out that it is not the amount of money that a present costs which makes it a ‘good’ present. It is whether it is given with love.
Show the chd a few pictures from the Nativity story and tell them that these are the pictures of the part you like best in the story. Ask them to tell you what is happening in these pictures. Ask them to tell you a sentence saying what is happening in these parts of the story. Ask them to say the sounds in the words.
Session 3 Whole group:
Tell the chd that we have a picture of some of the main people in the Nativity story on the board. Tell them that they will need to tell me who they are. Tell them we are going to write a label which is the persons name next to the correct picture. Talk about them being very important so they have to start their names with a capital letter (just like their own name). ask chd to tell you the names of the people and ask them to tell you the sounds they could hear.
Yellow MA chd to copy each letter of their name using correct formation
Pink TA chd to copy initial and final letters of their name using correct formation and tracing the rest.
Green A chd to copy initial letter of their name using correct formation and trace the rest.
Red SEN chd to rainbow write the initial sound of their name.
