Course Description

The fundamental purpose of Accelerated Coordinate Algebra is to formalize and extend the mathematics that studentslearned in the middle grades. The critical areas, organized into units, deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential phenomena, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Accelerated Coordinate Algebra uses algebra to deepen and extend understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The final unit in the course ties together the algebraic and geometric ideas studied. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

Materials

Students need to come to class everyday with a pencil, composition notebook, 3 ring binder, paper and scientific calculator. I recommend purchasing a Casio fx-300 ES or TI-30XS Multiview calculator. Calculators will not be provided in the classroom; students must purchase their own calculator. Please see me if you have trouble obtaining any of these materials.

Makeup Work

The attendance policy can be found in your student handbook. If you miss class, you will need to check the makeup work notebook in my classroom and get any handouts or notes for that day. YOU are responsible for getting makeup work and learning the material taught in class on the day you were absent. I am available for help before and after school.

Grading

It is encouraged that students keep all work and double check their grades. If there is a question about a grade that was given, the student must be able to present their work to overturn a teacher mistake. Your final grade for Coordinate Algebra at the end of the school year will be calculated as follows:

Daily Work------20%

Quizzes------30%

Tests------40%

Midterm Exam------10%

Georgia End-Of-Course-Test Score------20%

Cheating/Plagiarism

Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. You are expected to do your own work on all assignments. Students who are caught cheating will receive disciplinary action.

Classroom Rules and Procedures

1. Enter the classroom on time with all materials and immediately begin working on the

opening assignment on the board.

2. Participate in class discussions and group work.

3. Be respectful of yourself, the teacher, and your classmates.

4. Wait until I finish teaching to throw trash away, sharpen your pencil, ask to go to the restroom, etc.

5. Clean the area around your desk and make sure you put all materials in their proper place before leaving the room.

Discipline Policy

If you choose to disrupt the class, you will receive the following consequences. A severe disruption will result in an immediate administrative referral. Detention will be served in Mrs. Powers’ classroom, C-3, from 3:30-4:00.

1st offense:Verbal Warning

2nd offense:Student/Teacher Conference after class

3rd offense:Detention and Parent Contact

4th offense:Parent Conference

5th offense: Administrative Referral

Homework

Homework will be assigned most every night, but each assignment should only take about 30 minutes to complete. The purpose of homework is to reinforce material learned in the classroom and to extend your understanding of the topic. Therefore, it is extremely important that students make an effort to complete all homework assignments. Homework is graded for effort only, but homework quizzes will be given periodically that grade for accuracy. Please do not assume that because your child has a good homework average that he or she understands the material.

Important Dates to Remember

Midterm Exam:October 9th and 10th

EOCT:December 16th and 17th

Final Exam:December 19th and 20th
