PERFUSION ASSISTANT

SCOPE OF PRACTICE

The following situation will be addressed in this scope of practice:

Non WMCSM Employee Perfusion Assistant

RELATIONSHIPS:

Perfusion Assistant Specified Professional Personnel receiving clinical privileges must be employed by a service, which has a contract with Renown Medical Center South Meadows.

The hospital activities of the Specified Professional Personnel shall be under the supervision of the contracting agency who initiates the application and who is responsible for the professional and ethical conduct of the Specified Professional Personnel.

As well, the Specified Professional Personnelwill be indirectly responsible to the appropriate supervisors in the areas of the hospital in which the Specified Professional Personnel practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:High School Diploma, 2 years of college education or 2 years healthcare experience.

Experience:2 years of health care experience

Training:Demonstrate proficiency and knowledge in the following areas of cardiovascular surgery

a.Auto-transfusion equipment set-up and operation

b.Basic knowledge of proper operating room sterile technique

c.Basic knowledge of cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology

(Demonstrated to a perfusionist with the current perfusion contract company.)

NATURE AND SCOPE OF PRACTICE:

Perfusion Assistant may perform the following duties for cardiovascular surgery but only under the direct supervision of the Cardiovascular Perfusionist, the Cardiovascular Surgeon and the Anesthesiologist:

1.Perfusion Assistant/Cell Saver Technician may perform the following duties for those surgical procedures requiring auto-transfusion services using the "Cell Washer" but only under the direct supervision of the primary surgeon and anesthesiologist:

a.Set up the cell saver equipment.

b.Preparation of the anticoagulation solution.

c.Processing of the patient's shed blood through the "Cell Saver" unit.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1.Accountability for conduct consistent with the Renown Health System Corporate Culture Statement.

2.Accountability and ethical standards within guidelines of professional organizations.

3.Knowledge of Policies and Procedures for the areas of the Hospital within which the Specified Professional Personnel will function.

4.Demonstration of proficiency and knowledge in the following areas of cardiovascular surgery:

A.Auto-transfusion equipment set-up and operation.

B.Basic knowledge of proper operating room sterile technique.

C.Basic knowledge of cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology.
