Supporting Positive Social Participation

Dawn Normoyle

Many of our students come to us each day with a variety of factors that impact their behaviour within the school. Social participation refers to how students are able to engage with others in their learning environments. With the focus on moving forward with Action on Inclusion, Alberta Education has created a fantastic resource to support social participation.We will be using this resource as well as other supporting resources to learn a variety of strategies that you can use that will help decrease behaviour and support a student’s social participation, for specific times and activities throughout the day.

Review how to keep data on students that is useful for programming purposes and receive examples of forms to use.

Setting Boundaries
Joanne Crook

It is a simple yet profound experience to know that you have the right to set and keep strong boundaries. In this session we will review the characteristic of healthy boundaries and how to create and/or maintain them.

Supporting the Teacher with Adolescent Reading Strategies

Jerry will discuss adolescent reading strategies that support teacher instruction.

Understanding Learning Disabilities

Melody Cowper-Smith

“Learning Disabilities” is often a misunderstood diagnosis. This session will be presented in story form and will focus on the emotional, academic, behavioural and social impact of living with a Learning Disorder/Disability. Also included will be information about heritability, understanding test scores and the difference between Learning Disabilities, Learning Disorders and Low Cognition.

Developmental Coordination Disorder

SHOS – Stephanie Simon and Angela Tuton

This in-service provides an overview of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) along with basic strategies to support classroom success. Learn how to recognize signs of possible DCD and the importance intervention.

Developing Visual Schedules & Make and Take

Heather Linski

Who? Anxiety Disorders, Autism, Behaviour, Cognitive Delays – Everyone! What types? Object, photo, picture/symbol (Boardmaker), written. When to be used? Daily or task related. Where? Environmental – around the school, on the desk, on the child, on the adult. Why? Or Why Not?!

You will discuss Heather’s examples of a Structured Teach Model (TEACCH). Please bring examples of those you are already using to share and discuss.

An Introduction to Adolescent Grief & Loss

Blair Collins

Teens grieve differently that young children and adults. In this session Blair will discuss how teens may cope when they experience a loss.

Understanding the Video Game World

Mark Ballantyne

This workshop will demonstrate to participants an overview of the most popular, and concerning video games that youth are playing. Participants will get to see the games in action. Presentation material will outline the effects that these games have on youth, the concerns raised by the games, and the changing nature of video games becoming more explicit and scary. The intent of this session is to create a greater awareness about video games and it potential impacts on youth

Drugs in our Community

Cst. Cindy Dennis

Cindy is the CESD RCMP Liaison. Cindy will discuss drugs in our communities and they commonly used names and their alias names.

Educational Assistants in the Inclusive Classroom

Dawn Normoyle

This session looks at the shifts towards understanding an inclusive educational system. What does that mean for me in my role as an educational assistant? What might this look like in my day to day work with students? In this session we will explore some educational assistant’s best practices to consider when working within an inclusive classroom setting. We will focus on the roles and responsibilities of an educational assistant, how to create independence for students, a variety of universal supports and strategies to try, as well as ways to strengthen communication between yourself and the classroom teacher.

Developing Social Stories

Donelda Wygiera

This session will review the purpose behind social stories and how to use them effectively.

“Lost at School” CPS Collaborative Problem Solving

Mark Linski

This session will explore DSM behaviour disorder diagnosis and the characteristics observed in the classroom. A focus will be on lagging skills and implementation strategies using Dr. Ross Greene’s Collaborative Problem Solving Model. Examples of how you can implement Plan B will be discussed.

Support Staff Matters

Susan Roy

Susan Roy, Chair of the Support Staff Matter Working Group, will provide an update on the work of this group, answer any questions staff have, and provide an opportunity for EAs to share ideas on communication, pay and benefits, health and safety, working conditions, and more. Shawn Russell, Associate Superintended of People Services will provide an update on the work they’ve been doing on support staff evaluation and professional growth.

Safety First – Lifts & Liability

Linden Lonsberry

Linden will discuss some of the common safety issues that arise in our schools.

Please register with Lorrie Morris () no later than January 24. You will receive confirmation of your sessions.

Coffee/Tea and Snacks will be provided for the morning and afternoon breaks, as well, please join us for lunch from 11:30 – 1:00 at the Innisfail High School Gathering area. The menu will include BBQ Beef on a Bun, Soup and Salad. There will be no charge for lunch if you decide to stay, please let Lorrie know so she can confirm numbers with the caterer.
