Jacksonville Waterways Committee Update

TOPIC OF MEETING:Waterways Update

PRESENT:CM Bill Bishop, Chair, Waterways Committee;

CM Jack Webb, Vice-Chair-Waterways; Lynette Self; Dr. Quinton White, JU; Gerald Pinto, JU; John J. Jackson, Council Research; ECA-Suzanne Warren & ECA-Suzie Loving

  • Welcomed by City Councilman Bill Bishop, Chairman Waterways Committee
  • Each individual present introduced themselves.
  • Purpose of the meeting was to find out what has been accomplished by the committee in the past, what needed to be done for the future.
  • Update given by Dr. White & Lynette Self. He gave the history of the committee and what it had accomplished over the years.

* He noted that there were two bills that the committee needed to be

familiar with: 2007-458 and 2007-578. They had been deferred last

cycle but would be coming up again.

* Manatee Protection Program: a draft of the State’s Management Plan

was given out as well as a packet of aerial photographs pinpointing the

manatee sightings.

*Check with Parks & Recreation on the “Boater Study Grant”

* The committee needs to follow up on the following: Committee had

agreed to build a JSO Marina with a 3.2 million dollar grant received

from Homeland Security. The city hadagreed to match one million

dollars to receive the grant but it would be consolidated to be both

a JSO & Fire Marina.

* Attendance at meetings might include members from the various sub-

committees, representatives from the Coast Guard, JSO, FL Fish &

Wildlife, EPA & Army Corps of Engineering.

*Other issues to check on are; JEA’s reclaimed water plan, artificial reefs,

Derelict vessels, TMDL (total maximum daily loads); JCCI-Riverdance,

Proposed larger impact for water ways and the proposal for off shore

Powerboat races.

  • The proposal for the Manatee Protection Project for 2007-2008 was given to the committee members.
  • Chairman Bishop stated that the Waterway’s Commission meeting in August would be a status update, which actions to continue to initiate.
  • The meeting was adjourned at 10:40 a.m.
