The Intern’s core activities will be psychological support and therapy to survivors of domestic violence and their children who areliving in a shelter in Quetzaltenango. The Intern will support the staff psychologist in her daily activities, and will provide individual and group therapy.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the staff psychologist with daily tasks.
  • Provide group and/or individual therapy to survivors of domestic violence and their children.
  • Perform research and observation into the needs of the survivors and their children, and design treatment accordingly.
  • Support the volunteer team with fundraising and benefit events.
  • Help with children’s activities run by the volunteer team when needed.
  • Attend weekly volunteer meetings.

Requirements:

  • Advanced Spanish
  • At least 6 semesters completed in a Bachelors of Psychology
  • Experience with children and youth is an advantage
  • Experience working with survivors of trauma and domestic violence is an advantage
  • Lots of patience and understanding
  • Ability to work as part of a team

The Internship is 3 months minimum, between 30 and 40 hours per week,with roughly half of that time being research and preparation, and the other half devoted to therapy. This internship is available at any time during the year. The Associationis willing to host suitable candidates for longer than 3 months.

Costs:

The Internship Programme requests a voluntary donation of USD$100 per month (USD$300 for 3 months, plus USD100 for each additional month), which will be shared evenly between the host organisation and EntreMundos. This includes the internship placement, pre-departure contact support, a pre-departure information package about Guatemala, contact support while in Guatemala, monthly and final work evaluations by the internship supervisor, a certificate of completion, and follow-up contact with EntreMundos afterwards. Additionally, we will strive to fulfil any bureaucratic functions we can taking into account our capacities as a small, non-profit NGO.

This fee does not include your flights, health/travel insurance and medical expenses, or living costs while here in Guatemala. Basic living expenses in Quetzaltenango are about USD$300 per month, including housing and food.

For the successful candidate, this application fee will go towards the first month’s programme cost.
