Poor Man's Locker
Warning – use of a fiddle brake may break an axel
(line-locks could be used for a more elegant version)
If you never heard of it think how a farm tractor works. Instead of Duel Pedals
I used Dual Hand brakes? Yes it does boggle the mind.
First thing that comes to mind I'm nuts.... Why would I even think of it?
Here's the story. A good friend of mine did the same thing to his Jeep with great
success many years ago. Being a skeptic sometimes it can take years of testing before I will put ideas to print. He did and Last Swampswimmer Rally I tested it to the max. Fantastic response climbing uphill over boulders where my open diffs would leave wheels spinning in the air. Nice to be able to apply one hand brake to force the spinning wheel to stop and Watch the dead wheel start to turn. 47 trucks started this event and 36 trucks finished. I have to say this Matt and I came in 5th place, thanks to this simple Idea. Now for those of you who would like to know how we did it.
Read on!
Parts you will need.
1 One any year Lada Hand brake with short cable (adjusting nuts)
2 Two Lada Engine lifting brackets
3 Two saddle clamps from your favourite Hardware store. (for hand brake cable)
4 Four 1/4 20 x 1" bolts and nuts don't forget washers!
Tools you will need.
1 Drill and drill bits
2 Grinder with cutting wheel
3 Some wrenches to tighten nuts and clamps.
Okay position hand brake on floor between existing hand brake and passenger seat. When finished they will be sitting
apart approximately 2”.
Mirror image is what I mean. Only cut a small piece of the floor out in the same shape as your original hand brake hole. All ways check for gas lines and brake lines before cutting. Remove it to make sure of correct location and shape of hole. Place both hand brakes into their holes; now drill new holes in the floor to secure the new one to the truck. Note you will be cutting through
existing floor strengtheners. Don't worry that's why you put washers on both sides of your bolts. NOW's the point of no return,
CUT your cable in the centre (the one that goes to both your rear wheels)
Make sure you cut it correctly. (I used my grinder) The short adjustable cable you put one end of the engine brackets on. The other lifting hole you put the cable you just cut through and put your saddle clamp on. Note Left cable goes to Left hand brake and Right goes to right. Adjust to suit ....Done!
Its surprising how fast it went together, 3 Hrs max.
