ITINERARY
Day 1: Home City ~ Washington, D.C. ~ Welcome Dinner: Depart aboard a deluxe highway touring motorcoach and travel through Pennsylvania and into Maryland. Rest and meal stops will be made periodically. By late afternoon we arrive in the Washington, D.C. area and to our hotel for a delightful two-night stay. Gather this evening for dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 2: Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception ~ Memorials & Monuments ~ Illumination Drive: This morning we visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This basilica, which is the largest church in the Americas and the eighth largest in the world, tells the story of the faith of countless generations of American Catholics whose descendants brought their heritage of Christianity to America on the waves of immigration. The National Shrine is a marvelous place of prayer and pilgrimage. Enjoy a guided tour of the basilica followed by a private group Mass. Later this afternoon we embark on a guided sightseeing tour through Washington, D.C. Begin at Capitol Hill to see the U.S. Capitol. Travel down Constitution Avenue along The Mall past the Washington Monument, Smithsonian Museums, various embassies and the White House. Scheduled stops will be made at Lincoln Memorial, Korea War Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial and the World War II War Memorial. Later today travel into historic Georgetown for a delightful dinner at a local restaurant. This evening enjoy an illumination drive throughout the downtown area.
Day 3: Baltimore ~ Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary ~ Inner Harbor Mother Seton House & St. Mary’s Chapel ~ Emmitsburg: Today we head north to Baltimore. Rich in Catholic history, Baltimore is home to the first Catholic cathedral, first seminary and the first parochial school. Enjoy a guided tour and Mass at the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the nation’s oldest Catholic cathedral. The Basilica is where most of the first bishops in the United States were ordained and was once considered the most beautiful church in America. Later today enjoy free time for lunch and shopping at the InnerHarbor. Once home to decaying factories and warehouses, the harbor is now a showplace of gleaming office buildings and the glass-enclosed pavilions of Harborplace which rise from the water’s edge. This afternoon we visit Mother Seton House & St. Mary’s Chapel. This home is where St. Elizabeth Ann Seton lived and began the first catholic school. St. Mary’s Chapel, located adjacent to Mother Seton House, was where Mother Seton made her vows in 1808. Later today we travel west to Emmitsburg for dinner and overnight.
Day 4 - National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton ~ Mount St. Mary’s ~ National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes: This morning we visit the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. A fine museum displaying some of Mother Seton’s personal effects and a lovely Basilica containing her remains are among the beautifully restored and furnished buildings. Following Mass we travelto nearby Mount St. Mary’s and to the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes. Built in the early 1800’s, the grotto was the first national Catholic shrine. It is a replica of the Grotto of Lourdes in southern France where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette in 1858. Paved walkways wind through beautifully landscaped gardens which contain stone and copper Stations of the Cross and mosaics depicting the mysteries of the rosary. Overlooking Mount St. Mary’s is a towering 95-foot bronze statue of the Blessed Mother. Later today we leave Maryland and begin our journey.
