INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER ANIMATION

GRADE 9-12

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND INTENT:

Introduction to Computer Animation is a course in which students express their visual creativity through drawing, storytelling, and other visual mediums. Throughout the course students will explore the international history and evolution of animation. Students will demonstrate creative self-expression as they learn basic drawing skills, techniques for original character design, the natural flow and movement of objects, and background development which includes an in depth study of perspective drawing and layout. Instruction will be given in the following areas: Elements of art and principles of design; perspective drawing and layout, historical and cultural development of animation, and computer art basics and applications.

II.  INSTRUCTIONAL TIME:

Class Periods: Six (6) per six (6) day cycle

Length of Class Periods (minutes): 54

Length of Course: One (1) Quarter

OBJECTIVES
The learner will identify major contributions and developments in Animation. The learner will be able to identify and create a storyboard then convert it into a flipbook animation. The learner will begin to develop a list of elements in order to understand character and stage development..
ESSENTIAL CONTENT
·  Formulate an understanding of the elements that were necessary for animation to become an art form.
·  List several historical developments, which led to the present technological state of computer animation.
·  Cite several examples of the sociological and technical impact animation has made upon the world.
·  Evaluate the various functions of the storyboards and flipbooks.
·  Create a storyboard and flipbook animation.
Begin character development process.
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
·  Have student’s research animation historical facts and present individual findings through a Powerpoint presentation.
·  Discuss the purpose of animation events and the historical impact they have.
·  Discuss pros and cons of hand drawn animation versus computer generated

OBJECTIVES
Students will learn how to utilize quality components in order to create a claymation stop motion animation. The learner will combine their learned knowledge of storyboarding, character development and stage development in order create a photographic generated animation. Students will be introduced to the concept of using a camera and inanimate objects to create an animated video.
ESSENTIAL CONTENT
·  Demonstrate the use of the basic stop-motion techniques required to create a short animation.
·  Identify the design elements and principles that make up the composition of the animation.
·  Utilize a digital single lens reflex camera effectively in order to achieve animated characters within a controlled environment.
·  Apply photographic and computer effects to give stationary clay objects an implied movement.
·  Add music to animation.
·  Create a short stop-motion animation demonstrating the learned knowledge of storyboarding, character development and stage development.
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
·  Provide information on each compositional technique.
·  Demonstrate how each compositional technique is used in animated stop motion photography.
·  Demonstrate camera functions and photographic techniques.
·  Demonstrate how to create a stop motion animation using Powerpoint and Adobe Flash software.
