Course Description:
In 8th grade, students will encounter a wide variety of topics and vocabulary to begin building an active speaking, reading, listening and writing vocabulary. The emphasis is on communicative skills and as students progress through the year, they will build confidence in their ability to communicate in both spoken and written Spanish. The students will also learn about the cultures of various countries of the Spanish-speaking world. They will become aware of and learn to appreciate the growing influence of the Hispanic population within the United States.

The cultures of Spanish-speaking countries and communities in the U.S., etc.
Materials
Notebook: 3-ring binder used for all classes with five dividers for specifically for Spanish
Divider labels: En clase, Vocabulario, Apuntes, Canciones, Notas
Pencil/Black or Blue pen ONLY!!!
*Students must bring all necessary materials to class daily
Grading:
Students will receive grades for quizzes (usually 1-2 per week), tests (1-2 every 9 weeks), homework (2-4 per week), projects (1-2 per semester), class work (3-5 per week) and class participation. Projects may include written papers, computer-based presentations and/or websites, skits, dialogues and artwork.
The students will be graded on the following units:
Tests, Projects, and Common District Assessments 25%
Homework/Reading/AR 10%
Class work 20%
Class Participation 25%
Quizzes 10%
CATS 10%
Make up Work: Students are responsible for any work when they are absent. Make-up work is due according to the number of days a student misses, ex. 1 absence=1 day to make-up work. Students who miss the review for a test or quiz are expected to take the test or quiz with the class if they were present for the material. Students who miss a test or quiz are expected to take the test or quiz on the day that they do return to class. All other late work will not be accepted.
Parent / Teacher Communication:
Students will bring home a grade notification (Interim Report, Progress Report or Report Card). Other communication will be in the form of email messages, phone calls and conferences as needed.
Parents are encouraged to review and sign the student’s agenda each day. Please share your comments or questions about your student’s progress in the agenda and I will do the same.
Conduct / Expectations:
· Students will abide by the rules of conduct presented in the CHMS Student Handbook as well as additional rules that are posted in my classroom such as:
· Students will arrive in class on time in a quiet and orderly manner. Upon entering the room, students are to check the board for any announcements, instructions, etc.
· Students are responsible for bringing the proper materials to class.
· Students are to keep notes, assignments, tests and handouts in their 3-ring binder used for all classes
· When items are sent home to be reviewed and signed by a parent, they are expected back the following day.
Consequences: If a student does not follow the rules in Spanish class, they may receive silent lunch, at-home detention, morning detention, a parent contact, or an office referral
These policies and procedures may be adjusted as needed.
