Reassessment
The requirements for students to continue to the next stage of their programme can be found in the Assessment Regulations for Northumbria Awards (ARNA) which is available from the Assessment Documentation for Students webpage.
- To pass a module, all module assessment components must be completed and the module pass mark, if any, must be achieved. If all modules have been passed, the Progression and Awards Board (PAB) will normally confirm that the student can progress to the next level or stage of the programme.
- Reassessment of a failed module may take the form of a referral (or resit) opportunity or the student may have a deferral (or first sit) opportunity. Where Personal Extenuating Circumstances (PECs) have been accepted, the PAB may give a deferral opportunity and the full mark obtained will count towards the end of level average. The module pass mark is awarded for successful completion of referred work.
- On full-time programmes where modules have been failed, the PAB will use the level average mark to determine whether the student is entitled to a referral opportunity in failed modules. The level average is calculated from the marks for individual modules and the number of credits each module contributes to the level of study. It is rounded to the nearest percentage using standard conventions (.5 and above rounded up to the nearest whole number, .4 and below rounded down).
- On part-time programmes, the opportunity for reassessment/referral of failed modules does not depend on overall performance on all modules studied at that level ie there is no level average requirement.
- On the date for publication of module results, via MyNorthumbria, students will be able to accessa summary of marks for modules taken in the current academic year (the Student Module Record Form or SMRF). Where a student has referral or deferral opportunities in modules that have been failed, the Faculty Office will ensure that the student is informed of requirements (eg whether the form of reassessment is an examination or coursework).
- Resit examinations take place in accordance with the Universityresit examination timetable. It is the student’s responsibility to find out when the examination will take place and where it will be held. There is a standard University deadline for submission of any coursework required for reassessment. Failure to attend a resit examination or to submit coursework for reassessment will result in a mark of zero being recorded for the reassessment. It is not possible to be awarded credit for a module if all assessment components have not been completed at first sit or resit.
- Before the start of the next academic year, the Resit PAB meets to consider marks and to determine whether students who have completed reassessments can continue on the programme.
Students should contact theirFaculty Office if they have any queries on any of the above points.
