JOURNEY TO CAMBODIA
The MAGiS
MAGiS08 is the Ignatian Program for World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia, for young people wanting to give and find more.
In preparation for MAGiS08 the MAGiS office will be holding a trial experiment (encounter) with young adults from Asia during July 2007.
Young Adults from Hong Kong, Cambodia, Korea and Australia are invited to come together for 8 days in Cambodia. It is a time to learn about each others’ cultures, yourself and God acting in your life. This particular experiment will focus on the unique offerings of the Seam Reap local community.
WHAT IS AN “EXPERIMENT”?
The term ‘spiritual experiment’ is taken from the formation experiences of Jesuits and other religious congregations that are founded on Ignatian spirituality. In these experiments, we learn more about our life-vocation by being aware of how we react in different situations – as a nurse in a hospital, as a chaplain visiting a prison, or as a beggar on a pilgrimage. By involving ourselves in very different situations, especially situations that are unfamiliar, our horizon is widened. We learn a lot from the lives of others, and this helps us to see ourselves in a new way and God at a deeper level.
The special quality of a MAGiS experiment is living and working together as an international group on a specific project. To embark on a Spiritual experiment, one needs to be willing to try new experiences and willing to discover God’s presence in unfamiliar circumstances.
MAGiS08 invites young people from 18 to 30 to join together on a journey with those of a like mind and heart from different countries, cultures and language, to explore and to share their experiences in an Ignatian context fostering a “faith that does justice”. MAGiS08 is an initiative of the Australian Ignatian Congregations who seek to accompany and support you as young adults (18-30 years of age) in discerning life choices.
“How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” (Ephesians 3:18)

WHAT WILL I DO IN CAMBODIA?
Most of the experiment activities will take place in and around Siem Reap. Cambodia offers diverse experiences of culture from being with the people in a floating village to visiting the ancient temples of Angkor. An important part of the experiment is not just the activities but the people you will be with. This experiment will offer you the opportunity to meet people who live a totally different life to you and to reflect on where God is present in that experience.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
The experiment to Cambodia will cost around $1300 USD depending on the costs of flights. This will include all meals, accommodation, travel and resources. Additional expenses will include travel insurance and personal spending money.
DO I HAVE TO BE RELIGIOUS TO GO ON AN EXPERIMENT?
No but we ask that if you consider coming on an experiment you have an openness to exploring a relationship with God. The experiment is guided by the traditions of St Ignatius of Loyola so it is framed in our Catholic tradition. The experiment encourages you to find God in all things- where ever that may be! We recognise that everyone is at a different point on their faith journey we just ask that you come open to God being present in your life and in the lives of others.
CAN I STAY LONGER TO TRAVEL IN CAMBODIA?
Yes, if you wish to make your own arrangements for travel after the experiment you are free to do so. Please discuss details with the MAGiS office as they may have a few good suggestions!
