OCTOBER BUSINESS MEETING

Club officers unlocked the room at the Artisans Hall on Friday, October 7th and were met with a surprise. The place was completely decked out for a party, replete with decorations and all the preparations necessary for a feast. There were buffet tureens on decorated tables, and the main business room was completely unusable for our meeting purposes. Nevertheless the membership got to work quickly to raise the tables and make the smaller, more intimate meeting a success. We’d like to thank all those who helped get the side meeting room ready to display the models.

John Goschke opened the business meeting at 8:30pm with an important reminder that elections for the 2006 slate of officers would be held at the November meeting. Long time contest chairman, Dennis Levy is no longer eligible to run, and Joe Voltz has thrown his hat into the ring. We’d like to thank Dennis for stellar service in this roll over the years. After several business and contest updates, John turned over the meeting to Craig Bennett who conducted the raffle.

First Timer

As a coincidence, a friend of Craig’s, Jeffrey Mase was showing for the first time. Jeffrey is interested in 35th scale armor, 72nd scale aircraft, and 24th scale cars. He brought in a 48th scale BANDAI Pzkfw III M, a full-scale replica of the Trigun of the Anime character, Vash the Stampede, and a 72nd scale Testors F4U-1 Corsair.

To top it off, Jeff turns out to be quite an Anglophile. He travels to England regularly, and brought in some photos of a contest at the Brampton Chapter’s IPMS UK show from September ’05. He also had some photographs of Hannants warehouse (Lowestoft, Suffolk). This outfit is probably the premier hobby shop in the UK. It was nice to see the photos; many of us know Hannants only through magazines and on the net.

NATURAL METAL

People really responded to this theme. With no exaggeration there was a full table with displays running the gamut from figures, to cars, to aircraft – well done! Among the many displays, Prez, John Goschke brought in a natural metal 72nd scale P-36 Hawk done up in gleaming Bare Metal Foil.

Charlie Lockard brought in a 1/48th scale P-51 done with Tamiya silver paint. Coincidentally, Jason Rothgeb brought in a Revell 25th scale 1969 Camaro SS-396 using the same Tamiya Silver Leaf paint to replicate “Cortez silver”. The small metal details were done in BMF, but overall the Camaro was painted using exactly the same paint, as the Mustang except that Charlie’s P-51 was gloss coated for decals – an interesting comparison. Jason also brought in a 1969 25th scale Revell COPO Camaro painted in Hugger Orange.

Tony Wootson brought in a 1/6th scale “Steel” Comic Book figure and base. Staying with the fantasy figure theme, Vince Buonfiglio brought in his bare metal “Robot Rider.” There were many more entrants on display, but I don’t have the column space to mention them all. We’ll have to repeat this popular theme sometime in the future.

ON THE TABLES

Craig Bennett brought in a 1/700th scale DML HMS Trafalgar built OTB. Vince Buonfiglio – always at work – brought in a 250mm bust of CAP’N JACK from the movie Pirates of the Caribbean – a remarkable likeness to the actor, Johnny Depp. Keeping with the movie theme, Vince also brought in a 70mm Andrea figure of The Last Samurai – a likeness of Tom Cruise.

Bob Ciccone, another trooper who always brings in a wealth of displays continued to regale us in small scale. He brought in an Extratech 72nd scale Italian Autoblinda, and an ESCI 1/72nd scale Fiat-Ansaldo M13-40, both built OTBon a Verlinden “Desert Road” in 72nd scale.

Longtime MFCA member, Art Etchells brought in an interesting display resulting from his recent trip to Istanbul, Turkey. In addition to several books on the Ottoman Empire, he brought in wonderful photos (some panoramic) of the city and the sites such as the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Golden Horn, the Dardanelles, and remnants of the City’s old wall. Of interest to figure modelers were some (90mm ??) figures of the Ottoman sultans – all ready-painted to make an interesting historical display.

Keith Jones brought in an AMT 25th scale ’53 Studebaker Piranha - in progress along with an AMT 25th scale ’64 Comet under construction and using Testor’s Ultraviolet paint.

Matt Pritchard displayed a Trumpeter 35th scale AS-90 - in progress -a modern British SPG. He also brought in his 35th scale Academy Merkava Mk III – 90% complete. If you’ve been following from previous months, you know its got resin skirts, lead foil covers, and ball and chain – anti rocket defense. He also brought in real neat desert diorama base which was attracting quit a lot of interest.

Jason Rothgeb brought in a Testor’s 25th scale Chezoom Custom ’57 Chevy completed using Testor’s Chezoom Teal paint, MV lenses and BMF.

After taking the summer off, it was nice to see one of our most prolific armor modelers back for a visit. Lou Ursino has been real busy working on a DML Pzkfw III G with a turned aluminum barrel, a Trumpeter KV-1 model 1942 built OTB, a Tamiya M4 Sherman with MV lenses, Eduard PE, and a Jordio Rubio aluminum barrel, and a Tamiya Soviet T-55 – in progress with a Chronos barrel. All kits were in 35th scale.

Not to leave out one of our best aircraft modelers, Joe Volz brought in a Tornado GR.1 RAF built using Airwaves resin seats, and an EH101 Merlin RN with interior details. Both kits were Revell creations in 72nd scale.
