Marty Walsh ran for mayor against John Connely and defeated him 52% to 48%. Marty Walsh is the first Irish American Mayor of Boston in more than 20 years. Walsh received support from unions nationwide. Walsh will be one of only a handful of mayors nationwide who is also a labor leader. Walsh will take office January 6th. He takes over for Thomas Menino who has been mayor since 1994. Walsh received a call from Barack Obama congratulating him on his victory.

This story is newsworthy because the Mayor of Boston is a very important position. Even though I do not live or work in Boston, what happens there is important for the whole state. Boston has not had a new mayor for a long time, so this new mayor could bring about a lot of changes. This story is also important because the election was very close and closely watched by much of the country.
