Dear Kindergarten Families:

We had some good discussions last week about fairness and the peace movement of Dr. King, and how we can be peacemakers. We have been practicing kindness and using “I can” statements in our learning targets, such as “I can be kind.”

Language Arts: This week we practice beginning /k/ sounds, introduce short and long /i/ sounds, and the words you, are. We continue sounding out words and sentences.

Letters to review at home: Ss, Mm, Rr, Tt, Bb, Nn, Hh, Vv, Aa, Cc, Pp, Gg, Ff, Ll, Kk, Ii

Sight Words: I, see, am, a, the, by, my, like, to, can, go, an, and, we, look, no, not, love, at, here, on, this, is, it, you, are

Making Meaning book: Cookie’s Week - “Juicy” vocabulary words: amusing, upset, grin, stuck

Reading Logs: I hope the reading logs will create a little excitement about reading. I explained that this is not a race; reading is at their own pace – no due dates. They do, however, collect stickers on the front, and a full log results in a trip to the Prize Jar and a new log. Directions are inside the front cover.

Math: We continue learning the numbers 11 through 20. We are using “10 frames” to “add on” to make a number higher than 10. Partners will play “Add to the Top” as they add two dice together and mark a graph. They are enjoying the new Math Stations format in the morning in their new math groups.

Science: Last week wedescribed some of the properties of water as it pertains to our 5 senses. This week we will learn about adhesion and how water can defy gravity and climb up!!

Coin Collection – Kindergarteners are collecting coins to reinforce counting, adding, and kindness as we hope to adopt an endangered penguin at the Detroit Zoo. Children can bring in coins to add to our collection jar now through February 10.
