MINGO COUNTY

NEXT GENERATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TIMELINE

May 2013 – 2014

NARRATIVE OF COUNTY NEEDS DERIVED FROM DATA

Analysis of student achievement data indicates that Mingo County’s weakest academic area is mathematics in all programmatic levels and the weakest programmatic level is the middle schools. Four middle schools for which we were accountable did not meet AYP; and based on the Growth Model Data, the majority of the middle schools scored in the Low Growth, Low Achievement quadrant in mathematics and reading language arts. State/county educational initiatives and 2012-13 summative and formative assessment data analysis reflect the need for the following professional development:

·  On-going and sustained professional development for all teachers in the county’s adopted mathematics programs – Investigations in the elementary grades and Carnegie Learning in the middle and high schools.

·  Mathematics Content professional development for all elementary and middle school mathematics teachers such as Fractions for K-5 teachers and Proportional Reasoning for middle school teachers.

·  On-going sustained professional development in the implementation of the Next Generation Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics for all teachers and administrators in Grades K-12.

·  On-going sustained professional development in the shifts in instruction in English language arts and mathematics for all teachers and administrators in Grades K-12.

·  Continuation of Technical Assistance for middle school administrators by RESA 2 administrative coaches.

·  Continuation of embedded instructional support in English Language Arts and Math for K-4 teachers by elementary instructional coaches; embedded instructional support in English Language arts and mathematics for middle and high school teachers by ELA instructional coaches and Carnegie math instructional coach; embedded instructional support for K-12 teachers by Technology Integration Specialist and STEM facilitator.

·  Continuation of professional development for principals and assistant principals in developing leadership strategies to create and maintain high performing schools.

·  Continuation of training of regular and special education teachers to implement co-teaching in the middle schools.

·  Professional development for school staffs in creating a positive school climate and culture by training a team from each school in the implementation of the IPI.

·  Continued training of school staff in the implementation of differentiated instruction, scaffolding, and SPL.

·  Continued training of school staff in student engagement and rigor and relevance in the classroom.

·  Continued training of principals and assistant principals in walkthroughs with an emphasis on instructional components he/she should observe in a common core classroom.

·  Continued training of school staff in the integration of technology to ensure that all students are technology literate.
