AN EARTHQUAKE IN LOS ANGELES

In pairs:

1)  Study the earthquake trace and the 20 labels

2)  Place the labels at the most appropriate places on the earthquake trace by using the correct number from each box

3)  Explain why you put each of the labels where you did

8.  Emergency services are put on red alert

9. Fires break out in a subway and in some homes

10. Mr. Fretwell, a television store owner, loses a lot of stock due to looting

11. A head teacher alerts her staff in San Jose primary school to put the earthquake drill into practice (drop, hold, cover)

12. Mr Podbury gets his Geography students to shelter under a table in case they are injured by falling walls and ceilings.

13. Burglar alarms go off all over the city

14. A car drives over the edge of a gap in the bridge caused by it collapsing.

15. Books tumble off the shelves in the history classroom

16. There are ripples in Ewain’s goldfish tank

17. Mr Hunt is trapped under a beam in his house that has falled on top of him.

18. The first emergency call is made to the 911 operator

19. Gwenna leaves her house to find her new car has been crushed by falling debris.

20. Smoke rises from Los Angeles & sirens wail.
