CIITS Phase 1 / 2011

Talking Points

1)  Introductory Phase 1 will be deployed on April 29, 2011. It will serve as a pilot for review by Kentucky’s leadership network participants, with representation from all 174 districts, in advance of a larger deployment to all teachers during school year 2011-12.

2)  The purpose of this phase is three-fold:

·  test the user experience in the CIITS system (the system is operating and standards are easily accessible)

·  test Help Desk support procedures

·  obtain feedback from the test phase

3)  Karen Kidwell, Content Leadership Network Coordinator, will provide the CIITS URL (https://ciits.kyschools.us) and Talking Points via e-mail for full distribution to the leadership networks on April 29. She will also be following up with network facilitators to share a message about a survey request (the link to the survey will also be posted in KDE announcements in CIITS).

4)  The leadership network participants will be able to access CIITS from any internet connected computer with a modern Web browser by logging in with ciits2011 as both user name and password. For this phase, all participants will be using the same login credentials. Participants SHOULD NOT change their password.

5)  A computer tech check function will be available on My Schoolnet page to allow participants to check computers for meeting system requirements.

6)  The April 29 phase will include access to the My Schoolnet page and Align tab of the system.

7)  The My Schoolnet page will serve as the posting page for announcements and communications about CIITS.

8)  The following items will be located on the My Schoolnet page: Standards Search link and CIITS Support Material link.

9)  The Align tab will include the Materials Search component and this tab will contain the Kentucky Core Academic Standards for English/language arts and mathematics along with select deconstructed standards associated with these standards. It will also contain the Program of Studies and Core Content for Assessment 4.1.for content areas OTHER THAN English/language arts and mathematics, Early Childhood Standards and AASL Library Media Standards.

10)  The deployment on April 29 will include around 200 total deconstructed standards (around 50 for E/LA and 150 for mathematics). The deconstructed standards will be loaded prior to Phase 2 into CIITS as resources and these will be in the original format created by Kentucky.

11)  In the Align tab, icons and number placeholders currently exist in the system but no standards will be populated with materials in the phase 1 release. Instructional materials (e.g., units, lesson plans. assessments and resources) will be deployed in a later phase. This is mentioned in the user guide.

12)  The April 29 phase will not contain instructional materials (late summer 2011), student level data (winter 2011), individual assessment data (spring 2012), formative assessments (fall 2012/optional pending funding), teacher and principal effectiveness information (spring 2013/optional pending funding) or school and district improvement planning software (fall 2013/optional pending funding). These components are currently being considered for future phases.

13)  Use with mobile applications will be addressed in a later phase.

14)  Technical assistance and support during this phase will be provided via a CIITS User Guide and local support through the Regional Network Content Specialists and school district Technology CIO’s. Issues requiring additional support beyond the local level will be escalated to Schoolnet.

15)  CIITS will eventually provide unique CIITS customization for school districts and teachers through the add content and edit layout functions. These functions will not be available in the phase 1 release.

16)  The following content related issue exists for E/LA standards:

·  currently, a reference to CCR coded standards are imbedded in the grade specific standards and deconstructed standards. The CCR standards will appear only in the deconstructed standards in the phase 2 release. Phase 1 feedback will not be required on this issue.

17)  The following content related issue exists for E/LA and Mathematics standards:

·  reference to the number and letter code in front of each strand or domain will be removed prior to the phase 2 release. The coding is unique to Schoolnet’s initial loading of standards and not related to the KCAS coding. Phase 1 feedback will not be required on this issue.

18)  A CIITS glossary of terms will be included in future phases.

19)  A survey will be provided to participants in order to obtain feedback from the test phase and this will be available through early June.

20)  Phase 2 will release CIITS to all Kentucky teachers and this phase will include linking standards with some number of instructional resources, expanding resource linkage providers, and providing workshops and web-based training in late summer, 2011.

21)  The Unbridled Learning logo has been included as a part of CIITS to represent KDE commitment to the implementation of SB 1 legislative requirements.

22)  An area on the My Schoolnet page is available called Take a Tour of Schoolnet. This function is part of the current Schoolnet product and this provides product details that have not been fully established to be within our overall future project work. This is an additional feature that is built in by Schoolnet but not reflective of the specific KDE CIITS project at this point.
