Science Lab Safety Contract

Purpose

Science is a hands-on laboratory class. You will be doing many laboratory activities using chemicals, equipment and glassware that can be dangerous if handled improperly. Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority for students, teachers, and parents. To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has been developed and provided to you in this student safety contract. These rules must be followed at all times. Please print out a copy and keep it in your science notebook as a reminder of the safety rules. You and your parent or guardian must sign the bottom portion of the page, and this must be turned in to Ms. Gonzalez before you can participate in lab activities. If you do not follow the lab safety rules during lab, you will receive 0 points for the lab and will not be able to participate in future labs until your parent/guardian has spoken with Ms. Gonzalez.

Lab Safety Rules

1.  Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory.

2.  Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction, ask Ms. Gonzalez before proceeding.

4.  When first entering the science classroom, do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials until you are instructed to do so.

5.  Do NOT eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum during lab.

6.  Perform only authorized experiments. Unauthorized experiments can be dangerous and are prohibited.

11.  Dispose of all waste according to the instructions given. Sinks are to be used only for water and those solutions designated by Ms. Gonzalez.

12.  Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth and body while using chemicals or preserved specimens. Wash your hands with soap and water after performing all experiments.

13.  When using knives and other sharp instruments, always carry with tips and points pointing down and away. Never try to catch falling sharp instruments.

14.  Anytime chemicals, heat or glassware are used, students will wear laboratory goggles. There will be NO exceptions.

15.  Dress properly. This means tie back long hair, do not wear dangly jewelry or loose, baggy shirt sleeves. No open-toed shoes are allowed for lab activities.

16.  Report any accident or injury to Ms. Gonzalez immediately, no matter how trivial it may appear.

17.  If a chemical splashes in your eye(s) or on your skin, flush with running water right away, for at least 20 minutes.
