TENNIS BY-LAWS

Boys and Girls

I. SCHEDULING:

A. The Varsity/JV schedule consists of 7 dual meets and a conference tournament. Frosh/Soph. team meets can be held at the opposite site upon mutual agreement of opposing coaches.

B. All dual meets shall be scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays whenever possible.

C. When possible, Wednesdays/Fridays are to be reserved as rain dates. Date agreed upon by by the mutual consent of coaches, but should be the first available date.

II. CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS

A.  Conference Champion will be determined by a combination of points earned from both the dual meets and conference tournament records. Dual meet result points would be determined by the meet results. A team would get the amount of points by the number of matches their team won for the dual meet. A team’s total meet scores would be added together to the conference tournament scoring established to declare a conference champion.

B.  For the BOYS season, there will be a regular season champion and a conference meet champion.

III. TIME SCHEDULE

A. Conference dual meets shall start at 4:00 pm or earlier if agreed upon by coaches.

B. Conference Varsity tournament shall start on Thursday- 8:00 am

C. The host schools will decide date, site, and format of the JV Tournament.

IV. LOCKER ROOMS

A. Locker rooms are not required for tennis.

B. Restroom facilities and shelter from inclement weather should be made available to participants.

V. ROSTER-UNIFORMS-PLAY RANKING

A. The WIAA rules regarding appropriate tennis clothing will be followed.

B. Both coaches shall exchange written lineups at the same time prior to the announcing of matches.

C. Coaches will play players in order of ability and SEC performance.

D. If a team’s ranking comes under suspicion, the AD in charge of tennis will investigate to determine if the honor system has been abused. The AD will then have a conversation with coach and AD of said team to correct the situation.

VI. AWARDS

A. Conference Champions 2 Bars (1 Boys & 1 Girls)

B. All Conference First Team 20 Gold Medals (10 Boys & 10Girls)

C. All Conference Second Team 20 Silver Medals (10 Boys & 10 Girls)

D. All Conference Third Team 20 Bronze Medals (10 Boys & 10 Girls)

VII. GENERAL

A. Regular ad scoring will be used in boys and girls varsity matches. No ad scoring can be used for junior varsity matches.

B. A 12-point tiebreaker will be used in all sets of SEC tennis meets.

C. An SEC team shall consist of 10 players, i.e. four singles and three doubles positions.

D. In case of inclement weather, the host school shall notify the visiting team by 1:30pm.

E. A top grade, pressurized, yellow ball, preferably heavy duty Wilson US Open, USTA Pro Penn, Penn, Dunlop or Wilson, is to be used for all conference meets. (USTA sanctioned ball)

F. USTA Rules shall govern meets and players conduct, except where superseded by WIAA or SEC rules.

G. The host school will provide two new tennis balls for each varsity match. New balls will be supplied at the start of the third set of the match at the request of either varsity player or doubles team.

H. Junior Varsity Matches: All varsity rules are to apply except when altered by the mutual agreement of the coaches. A senior shall be allowed to play in JV matches.

I. The coaching of the players shall adhere to WIAA rules.

J. The continuous play rules shall be enforced. All practice serves by all players in the singles or doubles must be taken prior to the start of the first game.

K. When a visiting coach knows that they will be late for a match by more than a 15 minutes, he/she should call the host school and inform them of the problem.

L. Media: The host school will contact the appropriate media as stated in the multi-sport bylaws.

M. AD in Charge of tennis will provide cell phone and email addresses for all varsity coaches before the first conference match.

VIII. CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE

A. The SEC Conference tournament will begin on Thursday, at 8:00 am. Rain make up will occur on Friday.

B. The coaches meeting to determine tournament seed will begin at 7:00 pm on the Monday, prior to the tournament. All varsity coaches are required to submit a seed request form and player season record form prior to the conference seed meeting via email or fax to the AD in charge of tennis by noon the Friday before the tournament. Any coach failing to submit a seed request loses their vote for that position. Seeding procedures will follow WIAA Rules, with the exception that in the best of interest of creating the most balanced draw possible; the one-in-four rule for seeding may be disregarded to allow for 4 seeds and a placement if they are warranted.

C. If a placement is given to a player, the flip of a coin will determine if the place will go to the top half or the bottom half. Heads goes to the tip and tails goes to the bottom. The placement will be placed so as to oppose the

D. The Conference will provide a Tournament Director that is responsible for site supervision. Schools will rotate supervision as determined at the seeding meeting.

E. A Tournament Committee will be established to determine the outcome of last minute changes in the draw. This Committee will include the AD in charge of tennis, the Tournament Director, and the Site Manager (if different from the TD, and if not different, then a coach as selected by the Tournament Director).

F. The Coaches End of Season Meeting will take place at the conclusion of the SEC Tournament Seed Meeting.

G. Scoring will be as follows: 1st - 6 pts, 2nd - 4 pts, 3rd - 3 pts, 4th - 2 pts, 5th - 1 pts, 6th - .5 pts, 7th - .25 pt, 8th - 0 pts.

H. If a player wishes to play in both the JV and Varsity Conference Tournament, she/he must get permission from the AD in charge of tennis for the SEC Conference. Substitutions will follow WIAA Guidelines.

I. If players are not able to come back for a match, it is the responsibility of that player(s) or coach of the player(s) to notify the tournament desk AND the intended opponent or opponent’s coach.

J. All changes to the draw will be done by the Tournament Director based upon the latest edition of USTA Regulations.

K. The decisions of the Tournament Director are final.

L. In order to enter the SEC tournament, a player must have played at least three matches, in varsity conference duals, at 1 - 3 singles and 1 - 2 doubles, 4 singles and 3 doubles must have three varsity matches overall at the flight. Seed will be determined by conference record 1st then overall record, followed by guidelines set forth in the latest edition of the USTA Regulations

M. Should a singles player or doubles team fail to have the requisite amount of matches played to qualify for entry into the tournament, the school will provide the AD in charge of tennis with the reason for the insufficient match totals in writing. A waiver of By-Law VIII-H will be approved if the reasons stem from legitimate circumstances that are through no fault of the player(s). Examples of such instances would include players returning from injury, illness, moving into the district mid-term, or due to another player(s) withdrawing or being removed from the team.

N. If such a player or team is let into the draw, their worthiness of being seeded will be determined just as if they were seed eligible initially.

O. There are to be only two (2) sites, unless moved indoors, for the Conference Tournament. If a school hosting cannot host with only two (2) sites, that school must contact the Athletic Director in charge of tennis. This must be done at least two (2) weeks before the date of the tournament. The next school on the rotation will then be asked to host if this occurs. The school originally hosting will still be the Tournament Directors and Site Managers.

P. A 10pt tiebreaker will replace the third set in the conference tournament.

IX. MULTI-SPORT BYLAWS (updated 8-19-15)

1. SEC AWARDS POLICY - TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL SPORTS:

a. “Team” sports include: Baseball, Football, Boys Volleyball, Girls Volleyball, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, and Softball. All Conference awards for team sports will be determined by a nomination and selection process.

b. “Individual” sports include: Boys Cross Country, Girls Cross Country, Boys Tennis, Girls Tennis, Boys Golf, Girls Golf, Wrestling, Boys Swimming, Girls Swimming, Boys Track, Girls Track, and Gymnastics. All-Conference awards for individual sports will be determined by finish at the Conference Meet.

c. Championship Bars will be awarded to Team Conference Champions and Team Conference Meet Champions. In the event of co-champions, a championship bar will be given to each co- champion.

d. First Team All-Conference members will be awarded individual gold medals.

e. Second Team All-Conference members will be awarded individual silver medals.

f. Third Team All-Conference members will be awarded individual bronze medals.

g. Honorable mention members may be selected, certificates will be awarded.

h. A player may not be on both First Team and Second Team All-Conference.

i. When selecting SEC All Conference First and Second Teams. ALL TIES MUST BE BROKEN.

j. Coaches will nominate candidates they feel worthy of All Conference recognition. Only Southeast Conference statistics should be used as criteria for nomination. While speaking on behalf of the players, non-conference statistics may be included, but the coach MUST separate conference statistics versus non-conference statistics when explaining.

k. Head coaches are required to attend the conference post season meeting as scheduled for their sport(s).

l. Head coaches in football, b/g basketball, b/g soccer, b/g volleyball, softball, and baseball must submit All Conference nominations prior to their post-season meeting as directed.

m. No deserving player will be excluded from all-conference nomination if the head coach fails to submit appropriate nomination information. Other coaches may nominate deserving players f rom opposing teams, if the head coach fails to comply with this requirement.

2. In addition to the individual SEC sport bylaws, coaches are responsible for following all WIAA rules and regulations, as presented in the most current “Senior High School WIAA Handbook” and the applicable “Season Regulations” handbook.

3. The Southeast Conference embraces positive sportsmanship, which provides expectations for coaches, athletes, officials, and fans. School officials and coaches will be provided with guidelines to good sportsmanship. The coach has the responsibility to review the concepts of sportsmanship with their athletes at all levels.

4. The coach of the HOST school in ALL varsity contests has the responsibility to report Conference Varsity results to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. In addition, each school’s coach has the responsibility to report varsity results to their appropriate local media/newspaper. It is important that ALL varsity conference results (conference meets, too) are reported to the Journal-Sentinel.

7. The SEC will annually award “Academic” All-Conference Awards to those individual student athletes selected by their school. Student athletes must participate in SEC sanctioned sports in order to be eligible for the Academic All-Conference award. An “Award of Merit” medal will be given to each school’s winner. Rationale and guidelines for this award are provided in the SEC Constitution.

All Selections will meet the following criteria:

1. Athlete must be a senior.

2. Athletes must have earned a varsity letter.

3. The GPA shall be 3.5 or better to be considered.

4. Each school will develop their own method of selection, using the above criteria.

8. The SEC will annually award “Sportsmanship” All-Conference Awards to those individual student athletes selected by their school. Student athletes must participate in sports sanctioned by the SEC in order to be eligible for the Sportsmanship All-Conference award. An “Award of Merit” medal will be given to each school’s winner. Rationale and guidelines for this award are provided in the SEC Constitution.

All Selections will meet the following criteria:

1. Athletes must have earned a varsity letter.

2. Each school will develop their own method of selection.

9. The SEC will annually determine an All-Sports Champion winner. The traveling plaque will be awarded to the single school that accumulates the most points in conference dual meet play. The rationale and point system to determine the winner is outlined in the SEC Constitution.

10. In the event contests are cancelled, other than summer baseball, it is the responsibility of the Host School Athletic Director to call the opposing school, by 1:30 pm the day of the game.
