Scripture: A Reading from the 1st Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians
Consider your calling, brothers and sisters. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many of noble birth. Rather God purposely chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who seem to count for nothing, to bring down or reduce the powerful. My brothers and sisters remember you that you have been called.
Scripture: A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew
As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of people." At once they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.
(Matthew 4: 18-22)
Reflection
A long time later, Jesus called some others by name. Jesus called Theresa, Shannon, Leanne, Alexandria, Peter and Scott, then a little while later he went on to call Danielle, Clare, Kevin, Joseph, Mallory, Jessica and Sarah. Those he called dropped what they were doing, and immediately began to follow him.
Reflection – continues
As the first disciples chose to follow Jesus, what did they leave behind? Nets, boats, some of their old friends, the very things they depended on for life and security! Knowing what we know about Jesus, and having experienced this week of camp, what are you ready to “leave behind” in order to follow him and continue His Mission – the mission you are called to continue.

Today Jesus continues to call disciples, those to continue the ministry that was started 2000 years ago. Today you are called. How will you respond? What will you drop? What will you do in response to Jesus’ call to you?

Now remember what you were, my friends, when God called you. From the human point of view few of you were wise or powerful or of high social standing. God purposely chose what the world considers nonsense in order to shame the wise, and he chose what the world considers weak in order to shame the powerful. He chose what the world looks down on and despises and thinks is nothing, in order to destroy what the world thinks is important."
