COLTS NIGHT
Notes for Communications
I am going to review what we do on most days during communications, then will discuss some other things we do throughout the week.
1. Read Aloud Book
--A book I read to them that ties in with the theme.
2. Spelling
--Rebecca Sitton spelling program
--Ties in the teaching of skills as well as spelling.
Helps them use the word correctly, and
helps them apply what they know about that word to other words they are learning.
--Probably starting in October
--Based on the high frequency words we use most
often inreading and writing. Ex: the, of, and, etc.
--Priority words are words that they will have to use
correctly in writing throughout the curriculum once they are designated priority words.
3. Skill Lesson
--Animated Literacy
--Read Story, Sing Song, Action
--worksheet that accompanies the skill. It lets us
know whether the student is understanding what is being taught.
4. Journal
--free writing
--star paragraph
--main topic, one, another…see example.
**during all writing, I hold them accountable for any word chunks we have learned, words I have seen them write correctly, priority words, etc.
5. Handwriting
--Give out rubric and go over it.
Accelerated Reader (AR)
--Books are selected based on their reading level from
the library. Students take the books home and read to their parents 2 times. Then, they bring the book back to school and take a test on the computer over the book. Points are awarded, and several times throughout the year, there is an AR store set up where they can spend their points.
--At the beginning of the year, the students in my group really aren’t able to independently read a book from the library, so points will be rewarded from the books they are taking home each evening to read to you.
Book-It
--This is done in the classroom, but after a certain number of books are read, a pizza coupon is earned.
Sight Words
--Right now we are working on number words, color words, and some of the basic sight words.
--There are 6 lists
Book Examples
Group Changes
--We constantly monitor your child’s progress. At the trimester, or before, if necessary, we adjust groups so that your child is reading with the group that is appropriate for their skills and reading level at that time.
CRT Testing
--Before school starts, and after each trimester, your
child is assessed on book level, and on their skills.
--This information is placed on the report card for
your information and is used to direct teaching.
Summer School
--If your child does not master all of the report card
skills, they will be placed on the summer school list.
Orange Progress Sheet
--Each month, your child will bring home a progress sheet. It will let you know where they started at the beginning of the year, and where they are now. There is a chart included that lists where they need to be by the end of the year.
