To ensure that the Housing Law Project is addressing community needs, the attorney also will work closely with neighborhood-based organizations, participate in borough wide outreach and off-site intake initiatives; and conduct community education workshops and trainings.

Temporary Full Time Staff Attorney in its HIV/AIDS Unit

Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation A, an established legal services program located in Central Brooklyn, is seeking a temporary full-time staff attorney to work in its Comprehensive Rights Unit (CRU) unit. This position is made possible by a grant from the New York City Council to address funding disparities in delivery of legal services to the HIV infected and affected, and while we anticipate the grant’s renewal we cannot guarantee funding for the position beyond the one year grant.

The Comprehensive Rights Unit (CRU) assists and represents low-income persons who are HIV infected and affected. The Comprehensive Rights Unit (CRU) provides assistance and representation to clients in the Brooklyn Housing Court, Family Court, Supreme Court, Surrogates Court and administrative forums before agencies such as the New York City Human Resources Administration and the New York City Housing Authority. The staff attorney position will have an initial concentration in eviction prevention and later incorporate family and education law. Additionally, we require staff attorneys to work in established and new collaborations with community-based organizations. It is anticipated that the position will be located in the corporation’s East New York offices.

Responsibilities include providing legal advice and counseling; case investigation; drafting legal documents; direct representation of clients; and working with community groups in outreach and education.

Applicants must have a J.D. from an accredited law school with admission to the New York Bar, excellent advocacy, litigation, writing and leadership skills and be able to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and conduct community outreach in low-income neighborhoods. The candidate’s work experience shoulddemonstrate a commitment to public interest law. Ability to speak Spanish and/or a Creole as well as experience with the abovementioned areas of law are desirable but not requirements. Salary is determined by a collective bargaining agreement based on year of law school graduation. Benefits include generous vacation and comprehensive health insurance. Legal Services for NYC Staten Island (across the street from the ferry) seeks a supervisor in Family Law/Domestic Violence. The supervisor will be responsible for directly supervising staff attorneys, overseeing outreach and community education, especially with local agencies serving immigrant victims, and working with community advocates to address systemic issues facing victims. The family law attorneys work closely with a social worker and paralegal to provide a wide range of services to clients.

LSNY Staten Island represents domestic violence victims in cases involving orders of protection, custody and visitation, child support, and divorce. We are starting to represent victims with VAWA self petitions and U visas as well. Our practice includes litigation in Family Court, Supreme Court and the Integrated Domestic Violence Court.

The nationally prominent Project, the first of its kind in New York City, uses federal and state litigation, policy advocacy, and community education to address the problems faced by low-income homeowners at risk of foreclosure due to predatory lending. The Project is actively litigating numerous cases in federal court challenging the discriminatory and abusive lending practices of several large sub prime lenders. The Project is also a statewide leader in policy advocacy around fair lending and financial justice issues

The staff attorney will be involved in complex litigation in federal and state court, as well as community education and policy advocacy.

South Brooklyn Legal Services seeks a staff attorney to work in our Family Law Unit on domestic violence cases. The Family Law Unit advocates on behalf of domestic violence victims in orders of protection, custody and visitation, child support, and matrimonial cases. The attorney will work out of the Family JusticeCenter ("FJC"), located in downtown Brooklyn. The FJC provides comprehensive legal and social services to domestic violence survivors and works with the Kings County District Attorney's Office and community-based agencies to insure that survivors have access to civil legal services. The staff attorney will work closely with a team of another attorney and paralegal from South Brooklyn Legal Services who will be located at the FJC, as well as other civil legal services providers to provide legal services to FJC clients. The position involves primarily litigation in the Family and the Integrated Domestic Violence Courts. South Brooklyn Legal Services' Family Law Unit Director will supervise the attorney on all aspects of litigation.

The staff attorney will interview, advise, and represent individual clients in court, conduct training sessions on legal issues at the FJC, and conduct outreach to under-served communities with other agencies.
