Section 504: What School Nurses Need to Know

Purpose: The purpose of this workshop is to familiarize school nurses with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and ADAA 2008 and how these two laws impact students with special health needs.

Course Objectives: After completion of this program, the school nurse will be able to:

  1. Understand the differences between IDEA (Special Education), Section 504, and ADAA 2008 for students with disabilities.
  2. List the responsibilities of public school districts related to Section 504 and ADAA 2008.
  3. Conduct a student evaluation for Section 504 eligibility and document the process to meet all legal requirements.
  4. Participate in developing an accommodation plan for a student once eligibility has been determined.

2:30 - 2:45 District legal responsibilities, including first and second notice
2:45 - 3:00 Referral process, district plans, and Child Find
3:00 - 3:30 Evaluation for Section 504 eligibility
3:30 - 3:35 Stretch break
3:35 - 3:45 Eligibility determination meeting and legal documentation requirements
3:45 - 4:00 Writing accommodations, yearly reviews, re-evaluations, and other

Cost/CEU Information: The workshop is free. Heartland AEA 11, provider #147, is offering .15 CEUs for a fee of $15.00 payable to Heartland AEA. Purchase orders are accepted.
